Polaronic Response of a Supersonic Impurity Strongly Coupled to a Bose Condensate

Abstract

How a mobile impurity exchanges momentum and energy with a many-body environment is a central question in nonequilibrium quantum physics. This exchange becomes particularly complex when the impurity moves rapidly and is strongly coupled to its bath. Here, we realize an interaction-tunable cold-atom collider with fermionic $^{40}$K impurities immersed in a $^{23}$Na Bose--Einstein condensate. A species-selective Raman pulse simultaneously launches the condensate and quenches the interspecies scattering length, producing an initial relative speed 36 times the condensate speed of sound. We track the ensuing relative motion as the interspecies interaction is tuned from weak coupling to resonance. At weak and intermediate coupling, the impurity dynamics are well described by a finite-energy two-body collision model. Near resonance, however, the early-time impurity acceleration is markedly suppressed relative to the two-body prediction, corresponding to a strong enhancement of the apparent dynamical inertia. The enhancement is observed near two distinct Feshbach resonances. These observations provide evidence for a polaronic response in the strongly coupled, supersonic regime of a degenerate Bose--Fermi mixture.

Fermi-pressure-assisted superradiant transition with a mesoscopic Fermi gas in a cavity

We study the superradiant phase transition of a mesoscopic Fermi gas comprising between a few tens and a few thousand $^6$Li atoms in a high-finesse cavity across a wide range of densities. We observe a non-monotonic variation of the superradiant threshold as a function of density, with a minimum reached when the Fermi and recoil wavevectors are comparable. The minimum corresponds to a crossover between Fermi pressure-assisted ordering and Pauli blocking of photon scattering, in good agreement with theory. This interpretation is confirmed by a study of the atom-number dependence of the ordering threshold and photon number scaling. Our system opens the perspective of studying few-fermion systems with strong and coherent light-matter coupling.

Aharonov-Casher Chern bands for ultracold dark state atoms

We consider the Aharonov-Casher (AC) condition for ultracold atoms adiabatically following the dark-state in a $Λ$-type atom-light coupling scheme. The AC condition establishes a relation between the geometric scalar potential and the synthetic magnetic field, resulting in a fully degenerate lowest Landau-level-like band in the adiabatic limit even if the magnetic field is inhomogeneous but has a proper sign. We derive a general requirement for the atom-light coupling under which the AC condition applies. The requirement holds if the Rabi frequencies of the $Λ$ scheme are superpositions of plane waves with the appropriate amplitudes and phases. In particular, the Rabi frequencies made of $N=3,\,4,\,6$ fine tuned plane waves yield a smooth background magnetic field of definite sign, as well as an array of non-measurable Aharonov-Bohm flux singularities. Departing from the fine tuning, the latter singularities turn into narrow subwavelength patches of the magnetic field with an opposite sign, which broaden the lowest energy band. The lowest band is also broadened for the fine tuned situation due to deviation from the adiabatic approach because of the finite atom-light coupling strength. It is shown that a proper combination of the two imperfections (departure from fine tuning and finite atom-light coupling strength) can lead to a significant reduction of the width of the lowest band, which can be made almost completely flat and furthermore becomes characterized by a nearly perfect geometry needed for simulating the fractional Hall states.

Dressed Floquet scars from protected zero modes in a Rydberg chain

We show that a symmetry-protected Floquet nullspace can host anomalous many-body eigenstates that are obtained by projecting structured parent states onto an exact zero-quasienergy sector. We demonstrate this in a periodically driven PXP chain with an exponentially large (in system size) protected nullspace. Over the accessible system sizes, special parent states show an exponentially increasing enhancement of their nullspace weight relative to the typical value, even as their absolute overlaps decrease. The resulting Floquet scars can therefore become globally orthogonal to their parents while retaining anomalous correlations inherited from them. We demonstrate this mechanism for two contrasting parents: a locally rotated volume-entangled Ivanov-Motrunich scar and the unentangled Rydberg vacuum. Floquet perturbation theory captures the weak-dressing regime, while exact diagonalization shows persistence into nonperturbative regimes where the Floquet Hamiltonian generically contains increasingly nonlocal terms. Our results identify projection into a protected zero-quasienergy sector as a route to Floquet quantum many-body scars.
