The QCD phase diagram and critical end point at finite magnetic field from holography with neural networks

Abstract

We study the magnetic-field-driven critical end point (CEP) of the QCD thermal transition at zero baryon chemical potential using a five-dimensional Einstein--Maxwell--dilaton (EMD) model. We calibrate the model to lattice entropy at zero and finite magnetic fields using a neural-network formulation of holographic radial evolution. As the magnetic field increases, the thermal transition changes from a crossover to a first-order transition. The merger of temperature turning points, a divergent specific heat, and a vanishing squared sound speed identify $(eB_c,T_c)\simeq(7.22\,\mathrm{GeV}^{2},95.9\,\mathrm{MeV})$. The transition-region inflection of $s/T^3$ defines the crossover temperature, while an equal-pressure Maxwell construction determines the first-order coexistence line. The two lines meet at the CEP. The change of transition order agrees qualitatively with lattice results. The phase boundary is a prediction of the calibrated model.

Gravitational instantons from closed superstring field theory

We test exact marginality of the deformation describing the resolution of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold by analyzing the closed superstring equations of motion to third order in the size, including $α'$ corrections. We find that the third order correction is unobstructed for all deformation moduli. We are also able to reproduce the Eguchi-Hanson gravitational instanton up to the second order in the field theory limit with a suitable choice of moduli.

The OPE Approach to Renormalization: Operator Mixing

Operator mixing is a generic and unavoidable feature in realistic quantum field theories, including QCD and effective field theories. Yet existing methods for computing anomalous dimensions in the presence of mixing remain limited by intricate sub-divergence subtractions and escalating computational complexity. In this work, we extend the recently developed OPE-based renormalization algorithm to systematically handle operator mixing. The key innovation is a recursive framework built on a strategically chosen basis of lower-dimensional symmetric traceless tensor operators as ``soft'' operators, which uniquely and fully determines the $Z$-factors of higher-dimensional ``hard'' operators from their lower-dimensional counterparts. This approach entirely eliminates the need for sub-divergence subtraction that burdens traditional methods such as the $R^{*}$ operation, thereby achieving a substantial reduction in computational complexity. As the first application of this framework, in the $ϕ^{4}$ model, we have obtained the anomalous dimensions for scalar operators with $Δ\leq 3$ to loop order five and for operators with $Δ=4,5$ to loop order four. In the $ϕ^{3}$ model, we obtain the two-loop anomalous dimensions for operators with $Δ\leq 10$.

Maximal $D=5$ trombone supergravity from M5-branes and $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-flavoured $\mathcal{N}=1$ class $\mathcal{S}$ operator spectra

We recently presented a new $D=5$ $\mathcal{N}=8$ gauged supergravity involving the local trombone scaling symmetry. It arises by consistent truncation of M-theory on the internal space of the Maldacena-Núñez AdS$_5$ solution dual to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ four-dimensional superconformal field theory (SCFT) of class $\mathcal{S}$ associated to M5-branes wrapped on an unpunctured Riemann surface. Using exceptional generalised geometry/field theory, we extend that construction to show that the same $D=5$ $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity also arises by consistent truncation of $D=11$ supergravity on the family of $\mathcal{N}=1$ M5-brane-wrapped solutions of Bah-Beem-Bobev-Wecht, including the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Maldacena-Núñez (MN1) configuration. Then, using recently derived mass matrices, we compute universal sectors of the Kaluza-Klein spectrum on the MN1 solution. In general, this universal spectrum is only locally defined, and we give a prescription for extracting globally defined subsectors thereof. This globally defined universal Kaluza-Klein spectrum is dual to a universal sector of the light operator spectrum of the SU(2)-flavoured $\mathcal{N}=1$ class $\mathcal{S}$ SCFT dual to MN1.
