Staircase phase transitions for the largest eigenvalue of heavy-tailed sample correlation matrices

Abstract

We establish staircase phase transitions for the largest eigenvalue of heavy-tailed sample correlation matrices formed from a $p_n \times n$ data matrix with i.i.d. real entries of mean zero and unit variance, allowing an infinite fourth moment. In the proportional regime $p_n / n \to ϕ\in (0, \infty)$, the first-order asymptotics depend jointly on the aspect ratio and the entry tail. The transitions are driven by collisions of large entries in distinct rows of a common column. The first collision order capable of producing a separated upper outlier is $k_* (ϕ) = \lfloor \sqrtϕ \rfloor + 2$, yielding the critical tail exponent $α_* (ϕ) = 2 + 2 / k_* (ϕ)$. This exponent decreases in steps as $ϕ$ increases, creating a staircase boundary between convergence to the upper Marčenko--Pastur edge and successive outlier levels. At exact critical tail scales, the point process of eigenvalues above the upper edge or the preceding deterministic level converges to a Poisson point process. The resulting nondegenerate limiting laws for the largest eigenvalue connect adjacent phases and have a positive atom at this baseline. If every fixed collision order is supercritical, the largest eigenvalue diverges in probability despite finite entry variance.

A generalized coupling approach for the weak approximation of stochastic functional differential equations

In this paper, we study functional type weak approximation of weak solutions of stochastic functional differential equations by means of the Euler--Maruyama scheme. Under mild assumptions on the coefficients, we provide a quantitative error estimate for the weak approximation in terms of the Lévy--Prokhorov metric of probability laws on the path space. The weak error estimate obtained in this paper is sharp in the topological and quantitative senses in some special cases. We apply our main result to ten concrete examples appearing in a wide range of science and obtain a weak error estimate for each model. The proof of the main result is based on the so-called generalized coupling of probability measures.

Geometric functionals of Brownian motion on Hermitian symmetric spaces of non-compact type

We study Brownian motion on Hermitian symmetric spaces of non-compact type in their bounded-domain realization. Using Jordan triple systems, we identify the spectral values after an appropriate change of variables as a Heckman-Opdam diffusion of type $BC_r$. We then analyze two Brownian functionals: the symplectic area associated with the canonical Kähler form, and, in the tube-type case, the winding defined by the Jordan determinant. For the area process we prove a martingale representation, a central limit theorem, and an exact conditional characteristic function expressed as a ratio of Heckman-Opdam heat kernels. For the determinant winding process we obtain analogous heat kernel formulas and prove convergence to a Cauchy law with scale determined by the initial determinant. These results extend classical formulas of Paul Lévy and Marc Yor from the Euclidean setting to the full class of Hermitian symmetric spaces of non-compact type.

On the rigidity of sloped height functions in $d\ge 3$ and non-crossing surfaces

We consider integer-valued $\nablaϕ$ height functions, with general convex interactions, placed on a slope. Sheffield (2003) conjectured that for all slopes, such height functions are localized in dimensions $d\ge3$, in the sense of having tight fluctuations in finite volume, and admitting infinite-volume limits. We establish this conjecture when there are two coordinates on which the slope vector is zero and on which the interactions are even and low temperature. In this setting, we also prove the uniqueness, in the appropriate sense, of the infinite-volume limit and classify its extremal components. We further study the structural properties of the infinite-volume limit. We establish the entropic repulsion between macroscopic domain walls (boundaries of level sets), showing that they are maximally separated in a precise sense described by a rotation-of-the-circle dynamical system. Lastly, we show exponential decay of correlations in the extremal components. Our setup includes, as a special case, infinitely many zero-slope integer-valued surfaces (of dimension two or higher) conditioned not to cross. We deduce the existence and structural properties of the bulk Gibbs measure over such non-crossing surfaces with any given average spacing.
