The star-forming past and quenching of brightest cluster galaxies in TNG-Cluster

Abstract

The Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in the most massive galaxy clusters of our Universe are, at present, mostly quiescent, elliptical, and red. However, their formation histories are unclear and likely different from those of massive ellipticals in lower-mass haloes. Simulations face the challenge of simultaneously requiring large volumes to sample massive clusters and sufficient resolution to model their stellar populations. Therefore, we make use of TNG-Cluster, one of the highest-resolution cosmological simulations of galaxy clusters, which returns 352 BCGs at $z=0$ with stellar masses $M_{*, <30 \mathrm{pkpc}} = 10^{11.6-12.9} ~\mathrm{M}_\odot$ and total halo masses $M_{\mathrm{200c}} = 10^{14.3-15.4}~\mathrm{M}_\odot$. 93 per cent of the BCGs are quenched at $z=0$, whereas at redshift $z>3$ all their main progenitors were still star forming. The star-formation histories of individual BCGs are complex, including multiple (re)quenching episodes. They rejuvenate on average $2.1 \pm 1.8$ times since $z=3$. BCGs quench for the first time $9.9^{+0.9}_{-1.4} ~\mathrm{Gyr}$ ago (10th-90th percentiles; $z=1.7^{+0.5}_{-0.5}$), while the last and final quenching event occurred $7.0^{+2.8}_{-5.0} ~\mathrm{Gyr}$ ago ($z=0.8^{+0.8}_{-0.6}$). We find a large scatter in the halo, stellar, and SMBH masses at both first and last quenching, suggesting no characteristic mass at which quenching occurs. Instead, BCGs quench for the first time when the cumulative kinetic energy injected by their SMBH equals the BCG binding energy, corresponding to a delay of $2.3^{+1.2}_{-1.2} ~ \mathrm{Gyr}$ after the first SMBH kinetic energy injection. Namely, TNG-Cluster BCGs quench when they experience significant gas expulsion. Our work shows that BCGs have complex and varied star-formation histories, with multiple rejuvenation episodes, but they ultimately quench due to SMBH feedback.

A Multispecies Unified Gas-Kinetic Scheme For Coupled Kinetic Material and Radiative Transport

We develop a multispecies unified gas-kinetic scheme for coupled electron, ion, and grey-radiation transport. Building on our earlier GKS-UGKS formulation, the method evolves electron and ion distribution functions in discrete velocity space and incorporates the velocity-dependent radiation-electron energy and momentum exchange terms, including contributions from the radiative flux and pressure tensor. The material fluxes retain species-dependent departures from local equilibrium, while angularly resolved radiation transport describes the radiative field. Electrons exchange momentum and energy directly with radiation and with ions through interspecies collisions. Both material and radiation interface fluxes are constructed from time-dependent kinetic solutions. Binary-mixture shock and Marshak wave benchmarks assess the material and radiation components, respectively. A three-temperature shock tube, radiative shocks, and a heterogeneous two-dimensional Tophat problem then demonstrate coupled wave structures and distinct electron, ion, and radiation responses. The resulting framework combines species-resolved kinetic transport with velocity-dependent radiation-electron coupling for radiation-plasma flows across different material and radiative transport conditions.

The ionised interstellar medium of DSFGs revealed by JWST/NIRSpec and ALMA: Super-solar metallicity, low ionisation parameters and, typical electron densities

We present a detailed study of near-infrared (2-4$\rm μ$m) JWST/NIRSpec spectra of 48 high-redshift ($z=2.53^{+1.32}_{-0.70}$) galaxies detected with ALMA at $>3σ$. From a multi-wavelength SED analysis we establish the sample has a a median stellar mass of $\rm\log_{10}(M_\ast/M_\odot)=10.8\pm0.1$ and dust mass of $\rm\log_{10}(M_{\rm d}/M_\odot)=8.7\pm0.1$, covering a broad range of far-infrared luminosity $\rm (\log_{10}(L_{FIR}/L_\odot)=10.9-12.7)$. The majority of sources show no signs of AGN activity, with 40% having either X-ray counterparts $(\rm L_{Xc}>10^{42}erg/s)$, elevated optical line ratios, or broad (FWHM>800 km/s) H$α$ profiles, although we note this is a lower limit due to the stochastic placement of NIRSpec slits. We establish the sample has a median gas-phase metallicity of $12+\log({\rm O/H})=8.71\pm0.02$, as derived from the [NII]/H$α$ ratio, with the most FIR-luminous galaxies ($\rm\log_{10}(L_{\rm FIR}/L_\odot)>12$) falling $0.15\pm0.03$dex above the fundamental metallicity relation. From the [SII] emission-line doublet ratio, we measure a median electron density of $\log_{10}(n_{\rm e}/{\rm cm}^{-3})=2.53\pm0.07$ consistent with less-massive, star-forming, galaxies at the same epoch. For nine galaxies with [OII] and H$β$ detections (median $\rm\log_{10}(L_{\rm FIR}/L_\odot)=11.81\pm0.15$), we derive a median observed (dust-uncorrected) ionisation parameter of $\rm\log_{10}(U)=-2.84\pm0.06$. Our results indicate that luminous far-infrared galaxies are massive, chemically evolved systems that appear to deviate from the standard dust and metal production equilibrium observed in less obscured galaxies. This study demonstrates the synergy of JWST and ALMA in unveiling the nature of DSFGs, and highlights the need for a NIRSpec survey of uniformly selected, massive, dust-obscured, galaxies to fully characterise their interstellar medium.

Radiative filtering unifies broad-line phenomenology in active galactic nuclei

Broad emission lines (BELs) are a defining feature of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), yet they weaken or disappear in both very low- and very high-accretion systems. These regimes are typically treated separately, and a unified physical explanation has remained elusive. Here we show that this behavior arises if line formation is governed not by the intrinsic luminosity of the central engine, but by the ionizing radiation field that survives filtering before reaching the broad-line region (BLR). In this picture, line production depends on the product of intrinsic ionizing capability and an effective transmission. Because the former increases from low accretion rates while the latter declines at high accretion rates, the effective ionizing field naturally develops a finite and non-universal window for BEL formation. This framework unifies the absence or extreme faintness of BELs in low-luminosity AGNs, LINERs, and weak-line quasars (WLQs), and accounts for the Baldwin effect and the $R_{\rm Fe}$ trend. It also necessarily implies the breakdown of standard BLR-based scaling relations in extreme accretion regimes. We show that a minimal quantitative realization reproduces this behavior across black-hole mass, accretion rate, and radiative efficiency. These results suggest that AGN emission-line phenomenology is governed by global regulation of the ionizing radiation field rather than by mere presence or condition of local gas.
