A simple Lagrangian for shallow water equations with constant potential vorticity

Abstract

Inspired by a recent gauge field description of shallow water equations [SciPost Phys. 14 (2023) 102], in this work we build a simple Lagrangian formulation for the case of constant potential vorticity. An attractive feature of the construction is that it does not appeal to a Clebsch-like parametrization or the use of auxiliary fields. It is also emphasized that on the equator, where the Coriolis parameter vanishes, the shallow water equations exhibit extra SO(2,1) conformal invariance. Using the group-theoretic method, a new exact solution is found, which is associated with the scaling symmetry transformation entering the conformal group.

Flow reorganization and transport enhancement in two-dimensional horizontal convection near a density extremum

Horizontal convection serves as a canonical model for geophysical and industrial flows. While the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation is well established, the impact of a nonlinear equation of state, specifically the density extremum of water near $4^\circ\mathrm{C}$, remains underexplored. Here we investigate this effect using two-dimensional direct numerical simulations over the Rayleigh number range $10^6 \le Ra \le 5\times 10^{10}$. We examine four configurations, contrasting extremum (EXT) and monotonic (MON) buoyancy boundary conditions against linear (LENT) and nonlinear (NELT) equations of state. Our results reveal that the EXT-NELT case undergoes a pronounced reorganization of the large-scale flow, evolving from a bicellular structure to a single-roll circulation driven by central `mixing plumes'. This reorganization manifests as transitional anomalies in the $Re$ scaling, while the emergence of full-depth plumes alters the heat transport mechanism. Consequently, distinct from the Rossby scaling ($Nu \sim Ra^{1/5}$) observed in the reference cases, the EXT-NELT case exhibits an enhanced heat transport scaling ranging from $Nu \sim Ra^{1/4}$ to $Nu \sim Ra^{1/3}$. To interpret this behaviour, we examine the total energy budget and identify an additional potential-energy transfer term, \(Φ_{i2}\), arising from the nonlinear equation of state. The scaling argument suggests that the magnitude of this contribution is controlled by the characteristic plume height ($\hat{z}$). Specifically, when plumes penetrate the entire cavity depth ($\hat{z} \sim H$), as observed in the EXT-NELT case, the global kinetic energy dissipation is no longer described by the standard OB HC energy closure alone. The resulting model captures the main trends of the numerical data and provides a possible energy budget interpretation of the enhanced transport observed in this two-dimensional configuration.

An unstructured finite-volume Helmholtz method with perfectly matched layers for heterogeneous two-phase acoustics

This paper presents a cell-centred unstructured finite-volume method for time-harmonic two-phase acoustics. A volume-fraction representation supplies density and acoustic compressibility. Face fractions average available neighbouring planar interface cuts independently of velocity direction, retaining the established one-field face-density closure. Cartesian complex-coordinate stretching provides perfectly matched layers (PMLs). Real-imaginary splitting yields a real-valued block system, discretized with corrected non-orthogonal fluxes and consistent boundary contributions. Verification covers homogeneous waves, layered gas-liquid transmission with PML truncation, baffled-piston radiation with Kirchhoff far-field reconstruction, and resolved rigid-sphere radiation forces. Homogeneous-wave pressure converges at approximately second order on orthogonal meshes and on meshes with non-orthogonal interiors and orthogonal boundary cells. Reconstructed velocity converges at approximately second order on orthogonal meshes and with an observed order of about 1.7 on the latter mesh family. Under aligned refinement, the layered case's relative whole-domain complex-pressure $L_2$ error decreases to $2.657\times10^{-4}$. The resolved-sphere force differs from the Gorkov prediction by at most 1.5% over the tested Rayleigh size range. The results quantify the accuracy and current limitations of the heterogeneous Helmholtz-PML formulation.

Studying oscillation death in two-dimensional cylinder-airfoil interactions with synchronization-theoretic autoencoder

Body-body interactions have long been investigated to leverage the performance of various fluid-based machines. This study analyzes the flow interaction between a cylinder and a NACA0012 airfoil using direct numerical simulation and machine learning. We consider a two-dimensional incompressible flow at Reynolds number 100, where the airfoil is positioned in the wake of a cylinder. By sweeping the parameter space, composed of the distance between the cylinder and the airfoil $Δx$, the relative height $Δy$, and the angle of attack of the airfoil $α$, four characteristic vortex-shedding regimes are observed. This study particularly focuses on suppressed vortex shedding at a certain arrangement as oscillation death in coupled oscillators, with the theoretical prediction of flow stability on a machine-learned low-order coordinate. Independent flows around each body are regarded as a system that exhibits isolated periodic vortex shedding at infinite distance, and interactions appear at smaller distances. We employ a synchronization-theoretic autoencoder to derive models for two coupled oscillators from an aerodynamic coefficient. The proposed approach, which enables the assessment of system stability and the prediction of vortical interaction behavior, may pave the way for the analysis of unsteady body-body interactions from the data-driven and synchronization perspectives.
