Baer-Type Ring Characterizations of Steinberg Algebras, with Applications to Leavitt Path Algebras

Abstract

We extend the theory of Baer, Rickart, and their local, graded, and $*$-analogues for Steinberg algebras. First, we prove that positive definiteness passes from the coefficient field to the Steinberg algebra, and that this, together with graded von Neumann regularity, characterized by Steinberg and van Wyk, yields graded locally Rickart $*$-Steinberg algebras. Then we show that local Baer behavior forces every compact open subset of the unit space to be extremally disconnected. Consequently, when compact open subspaces of the unit space are metrizable, local Baer behavior forces the groupoid to be discrete. In the discrete case, we use the orbit-by-orbit decomposition into finitary matrix algebras over isotropy group algebras to convert annihilator conditions into explicit matrix conditions. For groupoids whose isotropy is trivial or infinite cyclic, these ingredients yield complete local and unital characterizations. In particular, local Baer and graded local Baer conditions are equivalent to discreteness, while the ungraded local Baer $*$-condition additionally requires that every orbit with nontrivial isotropy be a singleton. We then apply the theory to boundary path groupoids. Using the Steinberg algebra model, we obtain the Rickart, Baer, and Baer $*$ characterizations of Leavitt path algebras, including the local and graded variants.

Comparing Numbers of Diagonal Subsemigroups and Congruences for Semigroups

Given a semigroup $S$, a diagonal subsemigroup $ρ$ is defined to be a reflexive and compatible relation on $S$, i.e. a subsemigroup of the direct square $S\times S$ containing the diagonal $\{ (s,s)\colon s\in S\}$. When $S$ is finite, we define the DSC coefficient $χ(S)$ to be the ratio of the number of congruences to the number of diagonal subsemigroups. In a previous work we observed that $χ(S) = 1$ if and only if $S$ is a group. Here we show that for any rational $α$ with $0 < α\leq 1$, there exists a semigroup with $χ(S) = α$. We do this by utilizing the Rees matrix construction and adapting the congruence classification of such semigroups to describe their diagonal subsemigroups.

General Polynomials and Eigenvalues Over Cayley--Dickson Algebras

In this paper, we provide an explicit method for determining the zero set of monic quadratic general polynomials over Cayley--Dickson algebras with any base field of characteristic not equal to $2$, which reduces the problem to finding the roots of univariate polynomials over the base field. For the special case of locally-complex Cayley--Dickson algebras over the reals, we prove that every such polynomial has a root. We prove the existence of right eigenvalues for any $2 \times 2$ matrix over Cayley's octonions (the real octonion division algebra), and our root-finding method allows the computation of some of the right eigenvalues.

Extending Structures for $n$-Lie Algebras

Motivated by the Casas-Loday-Pirashvili maps concerning representations of $n$-Leibniz algebras, we give an intrinsic characterization of the cohomology of $n$-Lie algebras with coefficient in a representation space $V$. We investigated the cohomology theory of $n$-Lie algebras in three different ways: cohomology theory of Leibniz algebras, infinitesimal deformation and abelian extension. In the main part of this paper, we solve the extending problems for $n$-Lie algebras. A necessary and sufficient unified-product criterion is obtained. The case of crossed products, sparse non-abelian extensions, matched pairs are studied as special cases. We also investigate the factorizations, deformation maps, and complements problem for $n$-Lie algebras. An appendix removes the general non-reduced unified product with all intermediate mixed components.
