Thermodynamic Stability of a Viscous Variable Generalised Chaplygin Gas

Abstract

We investigate the cosmological dynamics and thermodynamic properties of a viscous variable generalized Chaplygin gas (VVGCG) model in a spatially flat Friedmann--Lema^ıtre--Robertson--Walker universe, described by $P=-B/ρ^α$, where $B=B_0V^{n/3}$. The model includes a bulk-viscous pressure $Π=-3ξH$, with $ξ=ξ_0ρ^{1/2}$. We find that the physically viable branch corresponds to $ξ_0<0$, for which the positive viscous pressure dominates at early times, producing decelerated expansion. As the volume increases, the effective pressure changes sign at a finite volume $V_c$, while the transition to acceleration occurs at a larger volume $V_f$. At large volume, the equation-of-state parameter approaches a phantom-like regime for $n<0$. A detailed thermodynamic analysis of the thermal and caloric equations of state, entropy, heat capacity, and isothermal and adiabatic stability shows that the stability conditions and $c_V>0$ are simultaneously satisfied for $n<0$ and $ξ_0<0$. The entropy vanishes as $T\rightarrow0$, consistent with the third law, while the model admits a finite minimum volume and corresponding maximum temperature. Thermodynamic consistency is further verified through the fundamental thermodynamic identity. The framework also contains several existing Chaplygin-gas models as special cases. Constraints from the Hubble-57 data yield $α=0.0024$, $n=-0.0182$, and $ξ_0=-0.0015$, consistent with the thermodynamically stable parameter region. Thus, the VVGCG model provides a consistent description of cosmic evolution from an early decelerating phase to late-time phantom-like acceleration while remaining thermodynamically stable throughout the evolution.

A Temporal Splitting Theorem for Chronological Spaces

We obtain a generalization of Geroch's Theorem on temporal foliations in a globally hyperbolic space-time to chronological spaces under suitable topological and order-theoretic requirements. The foliation can be chosen to contain a given relatively compact antichain in one slice. We first prove the corresponding extension result for countable causal sets, and then give a direct proof for chronological spaces using past sets. Furthermore, we show that any chronological space-time admits a generalized Cauchy hypersurface containing a prescribed compact achronal set: it is crossed once by every inextendible timelike curve which is also a maximal chronological chain.

Matter-Dark Energy Transition: A Dynamical Systems Approach

In this study, we deviate from the traditional examination of the evolving universe through the scale factor and instead consider a parameter $\chiME$, defined by the ratio of two competing energy densities: matter (DM) and dynamic dark energy (DDE). While the scale factor's role is not neglected, it is inherently embedded within the evolution equations of these competing energy densities. By employing dynamical systems techniques, we investigate the behaviour of this ratio $\chiME$ to understand the dynamics surrounding the cosmological transition from matter domination to dark energy domination. This methodological shift allows for a more nuanced analysis of the matter-to-dark energy transition.

Enhancement of Electromagnetic Memory Effects

We show that the amplitude of electromagnetic memory can be significantly enhanced in comparison to known estimates. In a Lorentz breaking phase of lowered phase velocity of light, there exist critical spacetime directions of memory-source emission along the effective light cone, about which the total memory offset receives order of magnitude increases. The same amplification is already present in the Lorentz preserving case by considering ultra-relativistic memory-source charges. These observations may pave the way for a first observation of the phenomenon of memory and laboratory tests of the concepts of asymptotic symmetries and soft theorems.
