Characters of $F_4(\mathbb{C})$ at involutions

Abstract

The exceptional group $F_4(\mathbb{C})$ has two conjugacy classes of involutions: an involution $t$ with centralizer $\mathrm{Spin}(9,\mathbb{C})$, and the principal involution, with centralizer $(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})\times\mathrm{Sp}(6,\mathbb{C}))/\{\pm1\}$. We determine the values of all irreducible characters of $F_4(\mathbb{C})$ at $t$. For the irreducible representation with highest weight $aω_1+bω_2+cω_3+dω_4$ (in Bourbaki's labelling), we show that the character vanishes at $t$ if and only if $c$ and $d$ are both odd. In all other cases its value is $\pm 2^{-7}$ times the dimension of an explicit irreducible representation of $\mathrm{Spin}(9,\mathbb{C})$. The proof is a limiting argument in the Weyl character formula, combined with a decomposition over the three cosets of $W(B_4)$ in $W(F_4)$ and the triality action of $W(F_4)=W(D_4)\rtimes S_3$ on the weight lattice modulo the $D_4$-lattice. At the principal involution, Nadimpalli, Pattanayak and Prasad showed that the character value is $\pm 1/2$ times the dimension of an irreducible representation of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})\times\mathrm{Spin}(7,\mathbb{C})$. Comparing the two results, we find that the characters of $F_4(\mathbb{C})$ vanish at the two involutions for exactly the same highest weights. Together these results determine all irreducible characters of $F_4(\mathbb{C})$ at all involutions. We also explain how our formula at $t$ relates to the generalized Weyl character formula of Gross, Kostant, Ramond and Sternberg.

The universal monodromic Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov equivalence

Working with integral coefficients, we identify universal monodromic Iwahori-Whittaker sheaves on the enhanced affine flag variety with ind-perfect complexes on the Grothendieck-Springer stack of the Langlands dual group. This extends a similar result for quasi-coherent sheaves on the Springer stack due to Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov. We further prove a monoidal equivalence between bi-Iwahori-Whittaker sheaves and ind-perfect complexes on the adjoint quotient of the Langlands dual group. These results are used in the sequel to this paper to prove the tame local Betti geometric Langlands conjecture of Ben-Zvi-Nadler. Our proof of fully faithfulness provides an alternative to the argument of Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov. Namely, while they localize in unipotent directions, we localize in semi-simple directions, thereby reducing fully faithfulness to an order of vanishing calculation in semi-simple rank one and characteristic zero.

Tame local Betti geometric Langlands

Working over the integers, we prove that the universal monodromic affine Hecke category is monoidally equivalent to ind-coherent sheaves on the Steinberg stack, confirming a conjecture of Ben-Zvi and Nadler. Specializing to unipotent monodromy, this provides another argument for a fundamental theorem of Bezrukavnikov.

Mod $p$ Iwasawa algebras of pro-$p$ Iwahori subgroups

Suppose $F$ is a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and $G$ is the group of $F$-points of a split, connected, reductive group over $F$. Under a natural restriction on $p$, we determine the structure of the graded mod $p$ Iwasawa algebra $\textrm{gr}_{\mathfrak{m}}(\mathbb{F}_p [\![ I]\!])$, where $I$ is a pro-$p$ Iwahori subgroup of $G$. We also determine its maximal commutative quotient, and relate these results to Gelfand--Kirillov dimensions of smooth mod $p$ representations of $G$.
