Forecasting cosmological constraints from the nonlinear halo density field with Zel'dovich-inspired transform

Abstract

The Zel'dovich-inspired (ZI) transform is a local nonlinear transform of the density field that can Gaussianize the late-time matter field and recover information from higher-order $N$-point correlation functions through its power spectrum, with the parameter $η$ controlling the weighting of higher-order information. Using Fisher-matrix analyses of halo catalogs from the Quijote and Quijote-PNG simulations, we study the redshift-space monopole power spectrum of the ZI-transformed halo density field. The joint statistic $P_{\rm ZI,0}$, constructed from three representative transforms with $η=1$, $10$, and $+\infty$, yields substantially tighter constraints than the conventional halo power spectrum $P_{\rm h,0}$ on standard cosmological parameters, the summed neutrino mass, and primordial non-Gaussianity amplitudes, while outperforming the marked power spectrum for many parameters. We further calibrate a scale-dependent noise correction for the ZI power spectrum, with an effective noise amplitude that depends on wavenumber, and find that the correction further tightens the constraints. In particular, the noise-corrected $P_{\rm ZI,0}$ improves the constraints on $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm equil}$, $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm ortho}$, $M_ν$, and $n_{\rm s}$ by factors of $5.6$, $5.5$, $5.2$, and $5.8$, respectively, relative to $P_{\rm h,0}$. These results demonstrate the potential of ZI power spectra as a complement to standard two-point statistics for extracting nonlinear cosmological information. Our forecasts may be conservative because the halo catalogs have substantially lower number densities than those expected from forthcoming galaxy surveys.

Simultaneous determination of Hubble constant and cosmic baryon density: Forecasts for the synergy between FRBs and emerging probes

Two of the most pressing challenges in cosmology are the persistent discrepancy in measurements of the Hubble constant, referred to as the Hubble tension, and the deficit of baryons in the local Universe, known as the missing baryon problem. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) provide a unique probe of both the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the cosmic baryon density $Ω_{\rm b}$. However, constraints from FRBs alone suffer from a severe $H_0$-$Ω_{\rm b}$ degeneracy that prevents them from resolving either problem. We show that this degeneracy can be broken by combining FRBs with other emerging probes whose degeneracy directions differ in the $H_0$-$Ω_{\rm b}$ plane. Specifically, we quantify three multi-messenger approaches: FRBs paired with gravitational wave (GW) standard sirens, strong gravitational lensing (SGL) time delays, and 21 cm intensity mapping (IM) surveys. The combinations FRB+GW, FRB+SGL, and FRB+21 cm IM each deliver simultaneous constraints on $H_0$ and $Ω_{\rm b}$ better than (1%, 1.5%) in the $Λ$CDM model, and when dynamical dark energy is introduced, the constraining precision degrades gracefully as model complexity increases. Furthermore, within a model-independent framework, both FRB+GW and FRB+SGL constrain $H_0$ and $Ω_{\rm b}$ to precisions better than (1.5%, 3%). These precision levels are based on nominal observational expectations and would improve significantly under optimistic observational scenarios.

Cosmic Birefringence from Large Lepton Asymmetry

Cosmic birefringence, the rotation of the polarization plane of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons, provides an intriguing probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we investigate a vector Chern-Simons coupling between the neutrino current and photons as a possible origin of isotropic cosmic birefringence. Firstly, we perform the first analysis of anisotropic cosmic birefringence induced by the neutrino current. We find that the anisotropic signal sourced by lepton-number isocurvature fluctuations can be important on large scales, whereas on small scales, the anisotropic signal induced by gravitational effects becomes dominant comparing with the axion-like particle (ALP) scenario. Secondly, we show that a large lepton asymmetry generated through the Affleck-Dine mechanism can successfully account for the observed isotropic birefringence, and discuss its possible connection to the recently reported low helium-4 abundances in Subaru EMPRESS and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT).

Gravitational Wave Background from Metastable Current-Carrying Cosmic Strings

We study the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) generated by networks of current-carrying metastable cosmic strings (MSCSs). Extending previous studies, we include the possibility of vorton formation phenomenologically. We construct an analytical template that provides a fast and accurate approximation to the spectrum in the frequency range probed by pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). We also show how the parameters of cosmic string networks determine the low-frequency slope. For the frequency range relevant for LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK), we derive an analytical expression that constrains the scale-invariant part of the SGWB. Finally, we confront the model with current constraints from PTAs and the LVK collaboration. We identify regions of the parameter space that can produce a signal consistent with PTA observations but are in tension with LVK constraints, suggesting that additional mechanisms to suppress the high-frequency spectrum are required for a consistent interpretation of the PTA signal
