Anomaly-free six-dimensional $Sp(1)_R$-gauged supergravities

Abstract

We study anomaly constraints in six-dimensional $N=(1,0)$ supergravity with gauged $Sp(1)_R$ symmetry, one tensor multiplet, $n_V$ vector multiplets and $n_H$ hypermultiplets. Imposing cancellation of local gravitational, gauge and mixed anomalies, together with the embedding of the anomaly coefficients in a unimodular rank-two string charge lattice, the number of vector multiplets is sharply constrained: the only allowed positive values are $n_V=12$ and $n_V=96$. For a neutral abelian factor, or drone, the anomaly equations force the corresponding row and column of the abelian gauge-kinetic matrix to vanish. Such a factor therefore cannot be retained as an ordinary propagating vector multiplet. For $n_V=96$, within the class of semisimple non-$R$ gauge algebras containing no $A_1$ or $A_2$ factor, the exhaustive spectra-assembly calculation yields no drone-free spectrum. For $n_V=12$, the semisimple non-$R$ branch is necessarily $A_1^3$. In the doublet/adjoint truncation described in the text, we find $4{,}337{,}331$ consistent models, classified by $102$ anomaly-vector classes. We also consider the reductive branch $A_2\times U(1)\times Sp(1)_R$. For $A_2$ representations in $\{\mathbf 1,\mathbf 3,\overline{\mathbf 3}, \mathbf 6,\overline{\mathbf 6},\mathbf 8\}$ and primitive $U(1)$ charge assignments with $|q|\le 2$, we find $178{,}538$ solutions, classified by $21$ sets of anomaly vectors.

Connecting boundary entropy and effective central charge at holographic interfaces

The entanglement entropy of intervals in $1+1$ interface CFTs is modified in two ways compared to a CFT without interface: there is a finite boundary entropy contribution, and, for an interval with an endpoint at the interface, the coefficient of the logarithmically divergent contribution -- which is usually proportional to the central charge of the CFT -- is modified to an effective central charge. We show that the latter modification can be understood as a limit of the former using holographic duals of interface CFTs. Furthermore, we show that a finite contribution also appears in intervals that do not cross the interface and it is needed to ensure strong subbaditivity of the entanglement entropy.

M2 brane $S^3/\mathbb Z_k$ instanton partition function in ${\rm AdS}_4\times S^7/\mathbb Z_k$: 2-loop correction

As was shown in arXiv:2609.14497, the 2-loop $ {\rm T}^{-1}_2$ correction to the partition function of M2 brane wrapping $\mathrm{AdS}_2\times S^1$ inside $\mathrm{AdS}_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$ vanishes. This is in agreement with the localization prediction for $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS circular Wilson loop in ABJM theory interpreted in the grand-canonical ensemble according to the conjecture of arXiv:2505.21633. Here we study the ${\rm T}^{-1}_2$ correction for the M2 brane instanton wrapping $S^3/\mathbb Z_k\subset S^7/\mathbb Z_k$ dual to the leading non-perturbative large $N$ contribution to the ABJM free energy on 3-sphere. The 1-loop instanton M2 brane partition function was shown in arXiv:2307.14112 to match the localization prediction. The 2-loop computation is complicated by the presence of bosonic and fermionic zero modes, which requires to integrate over the collective coordinates. The collective-coordinate Jacobian provides a non-trivial ${\rm T}^{-1}_2$ contribution in addition to the one of the quartic interaction vertex in the M2 brane action. We find that for $k>2$ the the quartic vertex contribution is cancelled by the Jacobian contribution for the choice of the separation of the fermionic zero modes from the quantum fields under which these form separate supermultiplets. Assuming the supersymmetric prescription for the paired zero modes we show that the cancellation persists after integration over the collective coordinates. Thus the ${\rm T}^{-1}_2$ correction vanishes, in agreement with the grand-canonical ensemble prediction. For $k=1$ the quartic vertex contribution reduces to equation-of-motion terms as in the case of ${\rm AdS}_3 \subset { \rm AdS}_7 \times S^4$ in arXiv:2511.22306 which is related to $S^3 \subset {\rm AdS}_4 \times S^7$ case by a formal analytic continuation.

Emergent $\mathcal N=3$ and Frozen $\mathcal N=2$ SCFTs from $\mathcal N=1$ Gauge Theory

Four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=3$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) are an exotic class of quantum field theories that admit no conventional Lagrangian description. In this Letter, we construct an $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory and argue that its infrared fixed point exhibits supersymmetry enhancement to an $\mathcal{N}=3$ SCFT. The ultraviolet theory has gauge group $SU(2)^3$, a set of chiral multiplets, and a suitable superpotential. By performing $a$-maximization, we obtain infrared central charges $a=c=5/4$, matching those of the rank-one $\mathcal{N}=3$ $\mathbb{Z}_3$ S-fold SCFT. The ultraviolet gauge-theory description allows us to compute the full superconformal index with four independent fugacities. We then examine various limits of the full index and further propose a closed-form expression for the Macdonald index, reproducing all known results for the proposed $\mathcal{N}=3$ theory. More remarkably, we argue that further gauging the $\mathcal{N}=3$ theory yields the frozen rank-one $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT conjectured from Seiberg--Witten geometry, providing strong evidence for its existence and unlocking its previously inaccessible full superconformal index. Our construction thus opens a systematic route to exploring the refined protected structure of these exotic, intrinsically strongly coupled theories using conventional $\mathcal{N}=1$ Lagrangian techniques.
