On the Cauchy Problem for the Sawada-Kotera Equation: Soliton resolution conjecture, Painlevé transcendents and asymptotic stability

Abstract

We derive long-time asymptotics in different space-time regions for the Sawada-Kotera (SK) equation with admissible data involving continuous spectrum and finite discrete spectrum. Our result proves the soliton resolution conjecture, yields the asymptotics governed by the F-XVIII Painlevé transcendent, and establishes the asymptotic stability of \(N\)-soliton solutions. More importantly, this extends the long-time asymptotic theory to the coexistence of solitons and radiation, whereas previous results were restricted to the purely continuous spectrum. One key ingredient in our argument is a new meromorphic Riemann-Hilbert framework that incorporates the discrete spectrum through complete six-point pole orbits while preserving cofactor analyticity and the singular structure at the spectral origin. A second ingredient is the combination of an orbitwise, region-dependent pole reduction mechanism and the \(\bar{\partial}\)-nonlinear steepest descent method, which allows us to select the solitons contributing in each region and separate them from the continuous radiation. Our framework also resolves the coalescing stationary points at the singular spectral origin through the regular modified SK problem and the Miura map.

Explicit Hamiltonian representations of meromorphic connections and duality from different perspectives: a case study

In this article, we present an explicit study of $\hbar$-deformed meromorphic connections in $\mathfrak{gl}_3(\mathbb{C})$ with an unramified irregular pole at infinity of order $r_\infty=3$ and their spectral dual corresponding to the $\mathfrak{gl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ Painlevé IV Lax pair. Using the apparent singularities and their dual partners on the spectral curves as Darboux coordinates, we obtain the Hamiltonian evolutions, the reduction of these evolutions to a single non-trivial direction, the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau-functions, the fundamental symplectic two-forms and the associated Hermitian matrix models on both sides. We then prove that the spectral duality connecting both sides extends to all these aspects, providing an explicit illustration of the generalized Harnad duality. We finally propose a conjecture identifying the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno differential with the $\hbar=0$ evaluation of the Hamiltonian differential in these Darboux coordinates that could provide insights into the geometric interpretation of the $\hbar$ formal parameter. As a byproduct we also obtain a rank $3$ Lax pair for the Painlevé IV equation.

Gibbs state postulate from dynamical stability

Gibbs states play a central role in quantum statistical mechanics as the standard description of thermal equilibrium. Traditionally, their use is justified either by a heuristic, a posteriori reasoning, or by derivations based on notions of typicality or passivity. In this work, we show that Gibbs states are completely characterized by assuming dynamical stability of the system itself and of the system in weak contact with an arbitrary environment. This builds on and strengthens a result by Frigerio, Gorini, and Verri (1986), who derived Gibbs states from dynamical stability using an additional assumption that they referred to as the "zeroth law of thermodynamics", as it concerns a nested dynamical stability of a triple of systems. We prove that this "zeroth law" is redundant and that an environment consisting solely of harmonic oscillators is sufficient to single out Gibbs states as the only dynamically stable states.

Discrete Unique Continuation on Simplex

For integers $N\ge0$ and $n\ge2$, let \[ Δ_N^{(n)} =\left\{α\in\mathbb Z_{\ge 0}^n: α_1+\cdots+α_n=N\right\}. \] We study discrete unique continuation for functions on this lattice simplex. For an integer $R\ge1$, let $g:Δ_{nR}^{(n)}\to\mathbb R$ satisfy \[ \sum_{i=1}^n g(β+e_i)=0, \qquad β\inΔ_{nR-1}^{(n)}, \] where $e_i$ is the $i$th standard basis vector. We prove that nonvanishing at the center implies \[ |\operatorname{supp} g|\ge c_n R^{\lceil n/2\rceil}. \] Here $\operatorname{supp} g$ is the set of points where $g$ is nonzero, and $c_n>0$ depends only on $n$. The exponent $\lceil n/2\rceil$ is optimal. The proof represents the values of $g$ as polynomial coefficients and uses a Pascal uncertainty principle, which bounds from below the total number of nonzero coefficients of a one-variable polynomial and its unit translate in terms of their degree.
