Dynamical $\mathrm C^*$-algebras and coarse geometry

Abstract

Both the uniform Roe algebras and the quasi-local algebras encode the large scale geometry of metric spaces. Whether these algebras coincide is a question which goes back to Roe and has only been recently solved by Ozawa. We propose a dynamical point of view on this problem. Given a set $X$, every map $h\colon X\to\mathbb{R}$ induces a one-parameter group $σ_h$ of automorphisms of $\mathcal{B}(\ell_2(X))$, given by conjugation by the diagonal unitaries $e^{ith}$, and we show that the operators which are continuity points of $σ_h$ are precisely the uniform Roe algebra of the pseudo-metric induced by $h$. If we moreover assume that $X$ is a uniformly locally finite metric space and $h$ is allowed to range over all coarse maps, this gives dynamical characterizations of both algebras: $\mathrm{C}^*_{ql}(X)$ consists exactly of the operators which are continuous for all such flows, while $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ consists exactly of norm limits of those which are analytic. The regularity conditions lying between continuity and analyticity then give rise to $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras between $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ and $\mathrm{C}^*_{ql}(X)$ which are invariant under bijective coarse equivalence, and we show that this scale is not degenerate: if $X$ is a coarse disjoint union of expander graphs, the algebra generated by operators which are analytic on a strip for every diagonal flow sits strictly between $\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)$ and $\mathrm{C}^*_{ql}(X)$.

Isometries between C$^*$-algebras with finite corank

We give a characterization of linear isometries with finite corank between two arbitrary unital C$^*$-algebras in terms of Jordan $^*$-homomorphisms and ``finite-dimensional remainders''. Also, the corresponding results are given for linear isometries and linear order embeddings between self-adjoint parts of C$^*$-algebras. In the finite-dimensional case, we give new examples of linear isometries between matrix algebras.

A boundary approach to rigidity of $q$-Araki--Woods factors

In this paper, we study structural and rigidity properties of $q$-Araki--Woods factors arising from strongly continuous orthogonal representations of $\R$. We first introduce an AO-type boundary property that is formulated in terms of length projections on the $q$-Fock spaces, and prove that all $q$-Araki--Woods factors satisfy this condition. We next characterize uniform convergence of the associated malleable deformations. We then use these two ingredients as a substitute for weak containment in the coarse bimodule and deduce several rigidity theorems in the framework of Popa's deformation/rigidity theory. As a main consequence, we prove that every $q$-Araki--Woods factor is stably strongly solid. We also prove a normalizer rigidity theorem for inclusions arising from direct sum representations. Finally, we compute Connes' $τ$-invariant, and construct a continuum of pairwise non-isomorphic type $\mathrm{III}_1$ $q$-Araki--Woods factors with the same $τ$-invariant.

On Relative Biexactness of Amalgamated Free Product von Neumann Algebras

Given weakly exact tracial von Neumann algebras $M_{1}, M_{2}$ with a common injective von Neumann subalgebra $B$, we prove that the amalgamated free product $M_{1}\overline{*}_{B}M_{2}$ is biexact relative to $\{M_{1},M_{2}\}$. When $M_1$ and $M_2$ are injective but not necessarily tracial, we further show that $M_{1}\overline{*}_{B}M_{2}$ is biexact relative to the amalgam $B$, and if $B$ is mixing in each of $M_1$ and $M_2$, $M_{1}\overline{*}_{B}M_{2}$ itself is biexact. We also develop a new criterion for upgrading relative biexactness and obtain structural decomposition and subalgebra absorption results for amalgamated free product von Neumann algebras that generalize the group case.
