Liquid xenon positron target flow optimizations

Abstract

In a previous work, we explored liquid xenon (LXe)-based positron targets as an alternative to conventional high-Z metallic targets for high energy physics applications. In this paper, we apply computational fluid dynamics simulations to the LXe target and containment vessel, including entrance and exit windows. We design a flow geometry that is able to quickly move heated LXe from previous beam pulses out of the target volume without significant boil-off. While our simulations indicate that the temperature of the exit window can be kept stable, the peak energy deposition density exceeds the widely accepted damage threshold of 35 Jg$^{-1}$ for ILC-like conditions.

Theoretical studies of envelope oscillations and instabilities of mismatched intense charged-particle beams in periodic focusing channels

The behavior of mismatched intense charged-particle beams in periodic transport channels of the solenoid and quadrupole type is studied theoretically. The envelope-oscillation frequencies of the mismatched beam are obtained by the smooth-approximation method and by numerical evaluation of the linearly perturbed K-V envelope equations. Phase shifts of the envelope oscillations and growth factors per focusing period in the case of instability are calculated for a solenoid and a magnetic quadrupole (FODO) channel using the parameters of the Maryland and GSI beam transport experiments. For comparison and the purpose of illustration, the K-V equations are integrated numerically, and envelope curves as well as single-particle trajectories for mismatched beams are shown in graphical form. In addition, computer simulation studies with the PARMILA code were performed, and results are presented both for K-V and a Gaussian distribution in transverse phase space.\\~\\ Published in: Particle~Accelerators~{\bf 14}, 227--260 (1984)}

Polarization-dependent exchange effects in intrabeam scattering

The emittance growth due to intrabeam scattering (IBS) depends on the scattering cross section and is therefore affected by the exchange interaction of identical particles. However, as the IBS growth rates are typically dominated by small-angle scattering events and the exchange interaction only significantly alters the cross section at relatively large angles, the influence of the exchange interaction is usually small. In this paper, we calculate the small corrections to the growth rates resulting from the exchange interaction. We include the polarization dependence of the exchange term in the cross section, and so we also present the growth rates as a function of the beam polarization.

Comment on "Beam blow up due to beamstrahlung in circular e+e- colliders"

The authors of the original article, Valdivia Garcia and Zimmermann (2021), state that they "derive analytical formulae for the equilibrium beam parameters, considering the varying electromagnetic field during the collision". However, to calculate the bending radius in the field of the counter-propagating bunch, they employed an approximation that is completely unjustified. Consequently, a significant portion of the formulae derived in the article bears a very tenuous relationship to reality. For practical purposes, we propose a different solution -- one that is far simpler and more accurate.
