Deformation Quantization of Schutz Quantum Cosmology: Relational Time, Constraints, and Physical States

Abstract

A controlled correspondence is established between reduced relational dynamics and extended constrained quantization in an FLRW cosmology coupled to a Schutz perfect fluid. A canonical transformation in the matter sector yields a deparametrized constraint of the form $\mathcal C=p_T+H$, with $T$ serving as an internal time. In the extended Weyl--Wigner formulation, the quantum constraint is imposed bilaterally. Its antisymmetric part gives the exact Moyal evolution generated by the reduced Hamiltonian, while its symmetric part imposes an independent quantum shell condition. For a fixed self-adjoint realization of $\hat H$, every reduced density operator supported on its negative spectral subspace admits an explicit distributional extension. A spectral dyad with energies $E$ and $E'$ is mapped to a clock Wigner distribution supported at $p_T=-(E+E')/2$, with relational phase determined by $E-E'$. The map preserves off-diagonal coherences, satisfies both star constraints, and has the reduced Wigner state as its $p_T$ marginal; it is therefore injective on the admissible positive-density sector. A flat dust model with $q=1/2$ and Dirichlet data provides an explicit example: its reduced spectrum is $(-\infty,0]$, so the admissible sector contains all normalizable reduced states. The correspondence applies to a fixed constraint representative and quantum realization.

Perfect fluids revisited: an action principle approach

We revisit the variational principle for relativistic perfect fluids in a manifestly covariant formulation based on differential forms, with particular attention to the boundary data required for a well-posed action principle. For timelike flows, the formulation reproduces the standard formulation of Schutz and Brown. We then examine the extension obtained by replacing proper time normalization of the velocity with a nullity constraint, with the he Bi{\v c}{á}k-Kucha{\v r} null dust action emerging as a special case. Requiring the complete action to be invariant under local rescalings of the null flow vector imposes the condition that the energy density depend only on the entropy per particle. For this class of null flows, the conventional equilibrium condition, \textit{i.e.}, that the energy density is convex, fails at non-zero temperatures, therefore limiting the interpretation of the fluid as an ordinary thermodynamic system.

RRR fluctuations from non-singular bounce

We present a consistent treatment of regularization, renormalization, and resummation in a framework involving a contracting phase, a non-singular bounce, and inflation with a sharp transition from slow-roll to ultra-slow-roll, enabling primordial black hole production. Within an effective field theory approach, we compute quantum loop corrections to the power spectrum across all phases. Quadratic UV divergences are removed through renormalization, while logarithmic IR divergences are softened via resummation, demonstrating scheme independence. The inclusion of contraction and bounce allows the generation of solar-mass PBHs, $M_{\rm PBH}\sim{\cal O}(M_\odot)$, with minimal inflation $ΔN_{\rm Total}\sim{\cal O}(60)$, thereby evading the no-go theorem. For $0.88\le c_s\le1$, the peak spectrum amplitude lies within $10^{-3}\le A\le10^{-2}$, preserving causality and unitarity. PBH abundances across $10^{-33}\!-\!10^{-27}$ and $10^{-6}\!-\!10^{-1}M_\odot$ are confronted with microlensing constraints to control PBH overproduction.

The Depletion of Collisionless Dark Matter Spikes

Dense concentrations of dark matter surrounding black holes provide a compelling opportunity to probe the nature of dark matter. In the classic Gondolo--Silk model, the adiabatic growth of a massive black hole in a dark matter cusp produces a steep density spike ($ρ\propto r^{-7/3}$), potentially inducing measurable gravitational-wave dephasings in intermediate and extreme mass-ratio inspirals (IMRIs/EMRIs). We challenge this paradigm by considering a collisionless dark matter spike embedded in a realistic nuclear star cluster. Using Fokker--Planck models of isotropic nuclear clusters, we show that mass segregation in a multi-mass stellar cusp accelerates relaxation relative to single-mass models, thereby driving the dark matter to the lower density $r^{-3/2}$ Bahcall--Wolf profile within 1 Gyr. In the inner regions, where the Fokker--Planck description breaks down, we model strong triple interactions between dark matter particles and EMRIs using post-Newtonian 3-body simulations. We show that EMRIs eject dark matter particles via gravitational slingshots, depleting the inner spike over a few Gyr. Because EMRI number densities are too low to drive two-body relaxation, and replenishment by DM self-relaxation is negligible, this depletion is irreversible. While the extent of EMRI-induced DM depletion depends on the EMRI rate and mass, we find reductions in densities by several orders of magnitude. As a result, the dark-matter-induced dephasings for EMRIs may fall below the LISA detectability threshold for massive black holes at $z = 3$ (2.14 Gyr) with masses $\lesssim 10^{5}\,M_\odot$ (for a low $\mathcal{O}(10) \, \mathrm{Gyr}^{-1}$ EMRI rate), extending to $\lesssim 10^6\,M_\odot$ for more realistic rates of $\mathcal{O}(100 - 300)\,$Gyr$^{-1}$. Our findings substantially reduce the parameter space over which massive black holes can host detectable collisionless dark matter spikes.
