Magic strikes for variance and gamma contracts, and other attainable claims

Abstract

Building on the forest expansion of Alòs, Gatheral and Radoičić and on the explicit Bergomi-Guyon smile expansion derived by Bourgey and Gatheral (2026), we derive fixed-point approximations, in terms of the implied total variance at a small number of magic strikes, for the fair values of power payoff contracts; the variance and gamma contracts arise as the endpoints of this one-parameter family, priced by a single set of formulae. We prove that such approximations exist at every order: at order $n$, $2\lceil n/2\rceil+1$ magic strikes suffice. Numerical tests under the Heston and rough Bergomi models demonstrate good accuracy even for strongly skewed smiles, and the method applies directly to interpolated market smiles without strike inversion. For the volatility contract, we show that the maturity-T smile does not determine the leading correction to the Rolloos-Arslan approximation.

Maximum principle for robust utility optimization via Tsallis relative entropy

This paper investigates an optimal consumption-investment problem featuring recursive utility via Tsallis relative entropy. We establish a fundamental connection between this optimization problem and a quadratic backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE), demonstrating that the value function is the value process of the solution to this BSDE. Utilizing advanced BSDE techniques, we derive a novel stochastic maximum principle that provides necessary conditions for both the optimal consumption process and terminal wealth. Furthermore, we prove the existence of optimal strategy and analyze the coupled forward-backward system arising from the optimization problem.

Optimal entry and exit for variance swaps: closed-form rules for the perpetual contract

Variance swaps are a convenient instrument for trading vega and convexity, and a listed contract now trades on Cboe. We ask when a trader should put such a position on and when she should take it off, and for a perpetual, continuously settled contract we answer both in closed form: each threshold is the unique root of a smooth-pasting equation in confluent hypergeometric functions. Under the pricing measure the question has no content, the mark-to-market being a martingale. Under the physical measure with a variance risk premium it becomes meaningful, and then reduces: the accrued variance separates exactly, the maturity, strike and costs are absorbed into a single forcing term whose sign fixes the geometry of the exercise region, and what is left on the perpetual is an affine reward on a CIR process, which the optimal-stopping literature already solves. Entering the position and exiting it are not mirror images. An exit rule follows from the premium and the trading spread, both observable. For the short --- the only side worth opening under the empirical sign of the premium --- an entry rule exists only for an interval of carrying charges, and even there triggers only deep in the upper tail of the physical law: a trader who is out of the market pays nothing to stay out, so an operational entry rule needs a cost of idle capital that the exit rule does not.

Optimal Liquidation with Support and Resistance Levels under Multi-Skew Brownian Motion

We solve the perpetual liquidation problem for a geometric multi-skew Brownian motion carrying local-time pushes upward at a support level and downward at a resistance level, a model of technical analysis that is Markov in the price alone. Three geometries arise, separated by a closed-form criterion: the continuation band lies below resistance, straddles it, or pins its upper edge there. Selling into resistance is a conclusion rather than an assumption. Identification is asymmetric: exercise behaviour determines the support parameters exactly, while the strength of resistance is recoverable only on an interval with a closed-form endpoint.
