Reduced scaling implementation of the coupled cluster-based static embedding method, MPCC with density fitting

Abstract

An improved algorithm to implement our previously proposed static quantum embedding method MPCC (J. Chem. Phys. 161, 164107 (2024)) is presented. It uses the density-fitting (DF) approximation for the electron-repulsion integrals (ERIs) across all layers of the embedding method: the low-level method, the screened interaction, and the high-level method. Additionally, an approximate factorized solution of the Sylvester equation is employed based on the Laplace transformation for the low-level method. To build the screened interaction, we have explored an approximate construction of it based on the distinguishable cluster approximation (DCA) by Kats and Manby (J. Chem. Phys. 141, 061101 (2014)), which amounts to neglecting certain higher-order exchange and ladder diagrams. Combining all these techniques, we have obtained an $\mathcal{O}(N^4)$ algorithm for the low-level method; a non-iterative $N_{\rm frag} \mathcal{O}(N^4)$ algorithm for the screened interaction; and an iterative $\mathcal{O}(N_{\rm frag}^6)$ algorithm for the fragment solver, where $N_{\rm frag}$ is the number of fragment orbitals and $N$ is the total number of orbitals. The resulting low-scaling implementation of the MPCC method is applied to trans polyacetylenes, that is, C$_{2n}$H$_{2n+2}$ molecules for chain lengths $n=1-8$, and the timing and accuracy of the method are compared to the original unfactorized implementation. Moreover, the approximations are further validated by applying the method to the potential energy surface of the \ce{O3} molecule. Finally, we apply the method to the selected molecules in the S22 dataset for which the performance of the MP2 method is known to be poor. The results demonstrate that the DF-based implementation of the MPCC method provides a significant reduction in computational cost while maintaining accuracy comparable to that of the original implementation.

Pushing the accuracy of on-top functionals with agent-driven supervised learning

Multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) combines multiconfigurational reference wave functions with on-top functionals to provide an efficient electronic-structure method for strongly correlated molecular systems. We developed a large language model-based agent for functional development and combined multiple databases into the large, chemically diverse MCDDB26 database. We then used MCDDB26 to develop two on-top functionals, MC26 and COF26. MC26 retains an existing analytical form but substantially improves performance by refitting its linear parameters with optimised weights for the training datasets. Building on this result, we developed COF26, a general hybrid on-top functional with a new analytical form. COF26 provides greater overall accuracy for multireference chemistry than existing on-top functionals. Applications across MCDDB26 show that COF26 accommodates both multiconfigurational and single-configuration densities. It therefore performs well for barrier heights, isomerisation energies, thermochemistry, non-covalent interactions, radical and non-radical chemistry, single-reference and multireference systems, and transition-metal chemistry.

RuNNer 2.0: A Software Suite for High-Dimensional Neural Network Potentials

We present RuNNer 2.0, the "Ruhr University Neural Network energy representation", a highly optimized software suite for training and evaluating high-dimensional neural network potentials (HDNNPs) of the second, third, and fourth generation. Long-range electrostatics and charge equilibration (QEq) for the description of non-local charge transfer in fourth-generation (4G) HDNNPs are accelerated by quasi-linear-scaling plane-wave methods, reducing QEq computational complexity from $\mathcal{O}(N^3)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N\log^2 N)$ such that linear or quasi-linear scaling is achieved across all HDNNP generations. An optimized memory management strategy eliminates the training overhead traditionally associated with long-range interactions, allowing 4G-HDNNPs to be trained with the same efficiency as their local counterparts. Developed in modern Fortran (2003/2008 standards), combined with a hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelization scheme, RuNNer 2.0 has been designed to run efficiently in any CPU environment, from cost-effective local workstations to massive HPC clusters. Its modular library architecture facilitates straightforward binding to external simulation software; native interfaces to LAMMPS and the Atomic Simulation Environment (ASE) provide full access to all its features, including built-in committee-based uncertainty quantification. The high efficiency and scalability of the RuNNer 2.0 ecosystem are demonstrated through detailed benchmarks.

Molecular Implementation of the Machine-Learned Skala Exchange-Correlation Functional in CP2K through GauXC

Machine-learned exchange--correlation (XC) functionals offer a route to improve Kohn--Sham density-functional theory without incurring the cost of explicitly correlated electronic-structure methods. Their use in production simulation codes, however, requires a well-defined mapping between the learned model and the host-code density representation. We formulate and implement a Skala-1.1 interface in CP2K through the external GauXC library. CP2K supplies the geometry, Gaussian basis, spin-resolved atomic-orbital density matrix, and communicator, while GauXC evaluates the XC energy, atomic-orbital potential matrix, and available nuclear derivatives. The interface accepts both all-electron and valence-only density matrices. The latter may arise from separable dual-space pseudopotentials or molecular effective-core potentials. Implementation errors are isolated from functional differences by comparing the Perdew--Burke--Ernzerhof (PBE) functional evaluated through GauXC with native CP2K PBE. The resulting interface gives consistent energies, forces validated against finite-difference total-energy checks, and force-based molecular-virial diagnostics for representative molecular cases. The dietGMTKN55 benchmark suite is evaluated with an all-electron Gaussian augmented plane-wave treatment for elements up to bromine and def2 effective-core potentials for the heavier elements. The resulting aggregate mean absolute deviation of 1.255 kcal/mol is within 0.012 kcal/mol of the corresponding Skala reference value of 1.243 kcal/mol. This work establishes a validated molecular implementation of Skala in CP2K through GauXC.
