Continuously varying exponents in the distribution of waiting times in the symmetric exclusion process on a percolation cluster

Abstract

We study the waiting-time distribution of hard-core interacting particles in the symmetric exclusion process on one- and two-dimensional lattices with side branches attached to each lattice site in the steady state. We use numerical simulations together with an approximate analytical treatment of particles trapped in side branches in the steady state. Such a two-dimensional carpet serves as a simplified model for trapping of a supercritical percolation cluster. At high particle densities, the system exhibits strong dynamical heterogeneity, with the distribution of logarithms of waiting times developing well-separated peaks corresponding to particles trapped at different depths from the backbone. We show that the probability that a tagged particle occupies the same position at time $t_0+t$ as at time $t_0$ decays algebraically as $t^{-ω}$, where the exponent $ω$ varies continuously with particle density for densities above a threshold value $ρ^*<1$. We also investigate the correlations between successive waiting times along the trajectory of a tagged particle.

de Almeida-Thouless Stability and Replica Symmetry Breaking in a Hybrid Watermarking Model with Image and Message Decoding

We investigate the de Almeida-Thouless (AT) stability of the replica symmetric (RS) solution for a spread-spectrum watermarking model incorporating Bayes-estimation-based image restoration. In our previously proposed model [1], which simultaneously performs message decoding and image restoration under Gaussian channel noise, a discrepancy between the theoretical predictions of the RS solution and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations was observed in specific parameter regimes. By analyzing the blind case where both the original message and image are unknown, we explicitly derive the conditions for the AT stability of the RS solution by clarifying the structure of the replicon eigenspace for the hybrid system. Our results reveal that AT stability is broken precisely in the parameter region where the RS solution deviates from MCMC simulations, thereby successfully explaining the mechanism underlying this discrepancy in terms of replica symmetry breaking (RSB). Steady-state density large deviations in driven diffusive systems

A diffusive system coupled to boundary reservoirs reaches a non-equilibrium steady state whose density fluctuations can exhibit correlations over macroscopic distances. While current fluctuations are well understood for generic systems, exact results for the steady-state density large-deviation functional remain restricted to a few special models. We introduce a field transformation within Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory that, in one dimension, captures two broad exactly solvable classes characterized respectively by local and non-local large-deviation functionals. The transformation also allows us to explicitly determine the optimal fluctuation paths, exposing the dynamical origin of non-locality and time irreversibility. For generic transport coefficients, the same transformation provides a systematic perturbative scheme in the boundary drive. In particular, we show that a finite bulk drive shifts the onset of non-locality from quadratic to linear order in the boundary drive and generically generates long-range connected multipoint correlations of arbitrarily high order. In higher dimensions, this onset depends on the orientation of the bulk drive relative to the boundary-induced density gradient.

Pattern stability in reaction-diffusion systems depends on path entropy

Reaction-diffusion systems driven far from thermodynamic equilibrium through the injection of energy can support multiple spatial patterns that persist as long-lived dynamical phases. The stability of these metastable phases is not determined by thermodynamics, but by the transition paths connecting them. At finite particle numbers, intrinsic stochasticity induces rare transitions between competing patterns, rendering continuum mean-field descriptions insufficient, while exact stochastic simulations become computationally prohibitive in spatially extended systems. Here, we make absolute instanton rate calculations, including fluctuation and symmetry prefactors, tractable for transitions between metastable patterns in large nonequilibrium reaction-diffusion systems. Applied to a canonical Schlögl model and an experimentally motivated ATP-driven membrane kinase-phosphatase network, the resulting rates agree closely with reaction-diffusion master-equation benchmarks. We show that an effective path entropy can qualitatively alter stability at finite particle numbers by selectively enhancing one switching direction. These results establish path entropy as an organizing principle for finite-particle nonequilibrium pattern stability.
