LandscapeSHAP: Which Persistent Homology Class Gets the Credit?

Abstract

Shapley values, a solution concept from cooperative game theory, have recently become a standard tool for feature credit allocation in machine learning. They provide an axiomatically justified method to fairly distribute a model's prediction among the data features. Shapley values have not yet been applied to explain machine learning models trained on features from topological data analysis. We develop what we believe is the first such approach, focusing on the persistence landscape featurization of persistence diagrams. Because each landscape coordinate is a rank statistic, crediting a model's prediction back to individual persistent homology classes (persistence diagram points) is nontrivial. We introduce LandscapeSHAP, a method for fair credit allocation to persistence diagram points based on a model's prediction. For linear models on persistence landscapes, LandscapeSHAP has a closed form expression that gives the exact Shapley value of every persistence diagram point. In particular, there is no coalition sampling required. We further prove that the four Shapley "fairness" axioms uniquely characterize this credit allocation for any model, not only linear ones. For a general nonlinear model, this unique value can only be calculated exactly from its defining coalition averaging formula, which requires considering all $2^N$ many coalitions, where $N$ is the number of points in the persistence diagram. This is computationally intractable for persistence diagrams of realistic size. We complement the exact linear model result with an efficient Monte Carlo sampling of persistence diagram coalitions. We give convergence rates in terms of number of samples needed to approximate to a desired degree of accuracy. We also prove stability results for the LandscapeSHAP credit allocation, for any model.

On The Acyclic MacPhersonian

The acyclic MacPhersonian $\AM_n^d$ is the poset of acyclic oriented matroids of rank $d+1$ on $n$ labelled elements, the combinatorial model of the space of configurations of $n$ points spanning $\R^d$ up to affine equivalence, which is the Grassmannian $G(d,n-1)$. We study it inside the larger poset $\Sep_n^d$ of \emph{spherical separoids}, those acyclic separoids whose Radon complex is a sphere of the dimension of the space of affine dependences. Our main unconditional results are as follows. Over every poset of spherical separoids that contains the realizable oriented matroids there is a tautological sphere fibration, and its Stiefel--Whitney classes show that the mod~$2$ cohomology ring of $G(d,n-1)$ is a ring retract of that of the poset, for all $n$ and $d$. For $d=n-2$ the poset of spherical separoids is homotopy equivalent to $G(n-2,n-1)$, and contains $\AM_n^{n-2}$ as a homotopy equivalent subposet. A fat model of $\AM_n^d$ made of piecewise geodesic antipodal spheres in the round sphere is weakly homotopy equivalent to its order complex. The chirotope of every such sphere is recovered from the degrees of its coordinate projections. We then analyse a strategy based on the mean curvature flow. Any argument that follows the combinatorial type of a sphere generically along the flow would connect every uniform oriented matroid to a realizable one by mutations. By a theorem of Gu and Knauer this is impossible in every rank $r\ge7$ on $n\ge r+17$ elements, so the flow must leave the oriented matroids. We show that the basin hypothesis of the flow, together with the property that $\|\AM_n^d\|$ is a homology manifold, implies $\|\AM_n^d\|\simeq G(d,n-1)$, without following types along the flow. We conclude with the open problems and conjectures that remain.

Units of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$-equivariant $K$-theory and bundles of UHF-algebras

We consider infinite tensor product actions of a finite cyclic group $G$ on the UHF-algebra $D = \text{End}(V)^{\otimes \infty}$ for a finite-dimensional projectively faithful unitary $G$-representation $V$ and determine the equivariant homotopy type of the group $\text{Aut}(D \otimes \mathbb{K})$, where $\mathbb{K}$ are the compact operators on $\ell^2(G) \otimes H_0$ for a separable Hilbert space $H_0$ with $\dim(H_0) = \infty$. We show that this group carries an equivariant infinite loop space structure revealing it as the first space of a naive $G$-spectrum. We identify this spectrum with the positive units $gl_1(KU^D)_+$ of equivariant $KU^D$-theory, which was not possible in the case of circle actions considered by Evans and the second author. Here, $KU^D$ is a $G$-spectrum representing $X \mapsto K_*^G(C(X) \otimes D)$. As a consequence the first group of the cohomology theory associated to $gl_1(KU^D)_+$ classifies equivariant $D \otimes \mathbb{K}$-bundles over finite $G$-CW-complexes.

Equivariant bordism rigidity for toric manifolds

In this paper, we develop a bordism-theoretic approach to rigidity problems for toric and quasitoric manifolds. We prove that two toric manifolds are isomorphic as varieties if and only if they are weakly equivariantly unitary bordant. We also establish a parallel rigidity result for omnioriented quasitoric manifolds satisfying the injectivity condition, showing that their equivariant unitary bordism classes completely determine their omniorientation-preserving equivariant homeomorphism types. Thus, equivariant bordism provides a topological framework for detecting geometric and combinatorial rigidity.
