Renormalized perturbation theory in an intense background electromagnetic field

Abstract

Quantum electrodynamics in strong background electromagnetic fields or strong-field QED (SFQED) has been investigated in great detail at the tree level. The study of SFQED at higher loops has not been carried out in a correspondingly systematic way, with the notable exception of strong background atomic fields. Here, we investigate the renormalization of SFQED by writing the standard unrenormalized SFQED Lagrangian density, which differs from the vacuum-QED Lagrangian density by the additional interaction term of the Dirac four-current density with the background four-vector potential, in terms of renormalized quantities and counterterms. Within this framework, we confirm the necessity of renormalizing the background field as an electric charge rather than as a photon field. We compare this approach with an alternative one which features a different renormalized Lagrangian density and we show that they are physically equivalent. As a byproduct, it will become clear that the renormalizability of SFQED directly derives from the renormalizability of vacuum QED. Also, we obtain that the renormalized SFQED Lagrangian density features a new counterterm as compared to the vacuum Lagrangian density. This counterterm is necessary to renormalize the electron self energy, which undergoes a new contribution as compared to vacuum QED, physically due to the electromagnetic field produced by the four-current density induced in the vacuum by the background electromagnetic field. The vacuum-induced electromagnetic field diverges and needs to be renormalized. We show how the renormalization of the vacuum-induced electromagnetic field is implemented explicitly at one loop and at two loops. The renormalization at all loops is shown to be more easily deduced at the level of the Lagrangian density. Finally, some subtleties concerning the renormalization procedure in the case of a free background field.

On the phenomenological implications of a Pati-Salam model spontaneously broken by Higgs fields in fundamental representations

We present a supersymmetric Pati-Salam model with small representations as a potential candidate for physics beyond the Standard Model. The model features a Higgs sector with bifundamental fields $H_R+\bar H_R=(4,1,2)+(\bar 4,1,2)$, $H_L+\bar H_L=(4,2,1)+(\bar 4,2,1)$ as well as a pair of bi-doublet fields $h_a=(1,2,2)$ where $ a=1,2$, with three families of fermions accommodated in $ (4,2,1)+(\bar 4,1,2)$ as usual. The matter spectrum is augmented with three copies of neutral singlets that mix with ordinary neutrinos to realize the seesaw mechanism. The model introduces supersymmetric R-symmetry and a global discrete $\mathbb{Z}_n$ symmetry ($n > 2$) that prevents disastrous superpotential couplings, while its spontaneous breaking implies the existence of domain walls that are successfully addressed. Interestingly, the one-loop beta coefficient of the $SU(4)_C$ gauge coupling is zero in the minimal $\mathbb{Z}_3$ model, rendering the corresponding gauge coupling near-conformal in the UV. Meanwhile, Landau poles are avoided up to the Planck scale and proton decay is suppressed, resulting in a proton lifetime beyond current experimental bounds. By virtue of the extended Higgs sector, the key advantage of this PS model is its ability to disentangle quark and lepton masses through higher-dimensional effective operators, addressing a common limitation in GUT models with small Higgs representations. This makes the model more economical and easier to be constructed from string theory, particularly in several heterotic and F-theory models where Higgses in the adjoint representation are absent.

Right-handed neutrino dark matter consistent with the generation of baryon number asymmetry

A right-handed neutrino is a promising candidate for dark matter (DM) which has no interaction with nuclei. Since two right-handed neutrinos explain neutrino oscillation data and baryon number asymmetry through both the seesaw mechanism and leptogenesis based on the out-of-equilibrium decay of the lighter one, the lightest third right-handed neutrino could be free from them and stable to be DM. It suggests a possibility that the right-handed neutrinos could be common key particles for the explanation of three problems in the standard model (SM). We study this possibility by analyzing the structure of a neutrino mass matrix in the scotogenic model for neutrino mass.

Modular TM$_1$ mixing in light of precision measurement in JUNO

This paper investigates the landscape of models based on modular $S_4$ symmetry that predicts the trimaximal TM$_1$ mixing pattern for leptonic flavor mixing, and explores their parameter spaces with constraints from the latest high-precision measurement on $θ_{12}$ and $Δm^2_{21}$ given by JUNO experiment. We review on how the mixing pattern arises from residual symmetries after the spontaneous breaking of a flavor symmetry, via an appropriate vacuum alignment of modular fields and flavon fields. We show three different models that realize the TM$_1$ in three approaches with the same symmetry structure. Due to different model building strategies used, predictions on the relations between the lightest neutrino mass and the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double beta decay are different, making them distinguishable.
