Efficient spectral Galerkin framework for nonlinear transient heat transfer in finite domains

Abstract

Accurately modelling the temporal evolution of heterogeneous temperature fields requires resolving strong nonlinearities in the heat equation arising from temperature-dependent thermophysical properties, latent heats of transformation and any local heat sources/sinks. In this work, we present a spectral Galerkin (SG) framework to solve the fully nonlinear transient heat equation in finite domains to attain the accuracy of high-fidelity finite element (FE) simulations at considerably lower computational cost. The heat equation is reformulated into a linear reference problem with constant thermophysical properties and residual forcing terms. Solving the reference problem provides a complete three-dimensional orthonormal trigonometric basis, whose Galerkin projection reduces the heat equation to a set of modal ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in time; the reference operator is diagonal in the modal basis, and results in independent modal updates for a fixed nonlinear forcing. These ODEs can be integrated using exponential time differencing and iteratively corrected for nonlinearities. The SG method eliminates the global solve required by FE methods, and its use of structured grids allows efficient GPU parallelization. Applied to rapid laser-metal interactions, the SG solver reproduces high-fidelity FE temperature fields with less than 1% relative error while achieving 227-fold faster GPU runtimes. Applied to a part-scale laser scanning study [Ramani et al., Additive Manufacturing 52 (2022) 102643], the method shows that accounting for evaporation and latent heat more than halves their proposed processing metric. Investigation of Fe-Ag and Ag-Fe Interfaces in Ag-57Fe-Ag trilayer Using Nuclear Resonance Scattering under X-ray Standing Wave Conditions

Understanding the interfaces of layered nanostructures is key to optimizing their structural and magnetic properties for the desired functionality. In the present work, the two interfaces of a few nm thick Fe layer in Ag-57Fe-Ag trilayers are studied with a depth resolution of a fraction of a nanometer using x-ray standing waves (XSWs) generated by an underlying [W-Si]x10 multilayer (MLT) at an x-ray incident angle around the Bragg peak of the MLT. Interface selectivity in Ag-57Fe-Ag trilayers was achieved by moving XSW antinodes across the interfaces by optimizing suitable incident angles and performing depth-resolved nuclear resonance scattering (NRS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements for magnetic and structural properties. The combined analysis revealed that the rms roughness of 57Fe-on-Ag and Ag-on-57Fe interfaces are not equal. The roughness of the 57Fe-on-Ag interface is 9.7 Angstrom, while that of the Ag-on-57Fe interface is 6.4 Angstrom. 57Fe isotope sensitive NRS revealed that hyperfine field (HFF) at both interfaces of 57Fe-on-Ag and Ag-on-57Fe interfaces are distinct, which is consistent with the difference in interface roughnesses measured as root mean square (RMS) roughness. Thermal annealing induces 57Fe diffusion into the Ag layer, and annealing at 325 C transforms the sample into a paramagnetic state. This behavior is attributed to forming 57Fe nanoparticles within the Ag matrix, exhibiting a paramagnetic nature. These findings provide deep insights into interface properties crucial for developing advanced nanostructures and spintronic devices.

Strain-induced Dynamic Spin-Phonon Coupling in Epitaxial RuO2 Films

Magnetic order parameters in altermagnets can couple to quantized lattice vibration via both piezomagnetic and magnetoelastic effects, leading to the renormalization of phonon dispersion. Here, we demonstrate photo-induced dynamic frequency modulation of THz phonons excited in anisotropically-strained epitaxial RuO2 thin films using ultrafast coherent phonon spectroscopy and time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect measurement. A coherent oscillation of a transverse acoustic phonon appears in the sub-THz range with increasing film thickness above 4 nm due to local dislocation arising from the anisotropic strain relaxation, which hosts large non-zero shear strain. Interestingly, this phonon mode exhibits a time-varying mode hardening below ~ 500 K. Furthermore, an optical phonon oscillation emerges in magnetization dynamics of the photo-induced non-equilibrium state, and it becomes significantly softened near the critical temperature, while there is no observable magneto-optic signal in fully-strain-relaxed films. Such notable dynamic frequency modulations in acoustic and optical phonons offer an opportunity to manipulate phonons in the THz range through the spin-phonon coupling controlled by epitaxial design, which can inspire the new class of altermagnetic applications in the ultrafast quantum opto-spintronics.

Al$_{1-x}$Hf$_{x}$N Thin Films with Enhanced Piezoelectric Responses for GHz Surface Acoustic Wave Devices

Ternary compounds obtained by alloying wurtzite AlN with transition metals have emerged as promising materials with significantly enhanced piezoelectric characteristics relative to binary AlN. The increased electromechanical coupling in these compounds boosts the performance of high-frequency acoustic devices. So far, progress has largely focused on Al$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$N, which is costly and poorly compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies. Here, we investigate aluminum hafnium nitride (Al$_{1-x}$Hf$_{x}$N) as a scalable and potentially CMOS-compatible alternative to Al$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$N. Using reactive co-sputtering on both Si and sapphire substrates, we demonstrate wurtzite Al$_{1-x}$Hf$_{x}$N thin films ($x \leq 0.17$) with strong $c$-axis texture and nearly isotropic lattice expansion upon Hf incorporation. X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicates cross-gap hybridization between N 2$p$ and Hf 5$d$ states, which can enhance the Born effective charge and, thereby, the piezoelectric response. Correspondingly, we observe a multifold enhancement in the piezoelectric coefficient, $d_{33}$, relative to AlN, despite increasing structural disorder in Al$_{1-x}$Hf$_{x}$N. Building on this finding, we demonstrate Al$_{1-x}$Hf$_{x}$N GHz surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators that exhibit enhanced performance, as well as efficient excitation of bulk acoustic waves with low propagation losses. These results establish Al$_{1-x}$Hf$_{x}$N as a promising platform for next-generation high-frequency electromechanical devices, with prospects for further piezoelectric enhancements through improved epitaxy.
