When 3D Gaussian Splatting Recovers Real Surfaces

Abstract

When does 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) recover the true scene surface rather than just overfitting view-dependent appearance? We answer this by developing a mathematical framework based on a first-hit rendering abstraction that cleanly isolates geometry from appearance. We prove that geometric misalignment forcefully converts spatial textures into high-frequency angular signals via parallax. This establishes a strict identifiability window: if angular capacity is bounded, surface-consistent solutions are mathematically preferred; if unrestricted, the same images can be perfectly explained by an incorrect, opaque billboard geometry. Experiments on synthetic stress tests confirm this prediction, showing billboard failures emerge precisely at high angular capacities. Conversely, in the real-world datasets we evaluate under standard capture protocols, reconstructions remain surface-consistent even at high SH degrees, which is consistent with the prediction that rich spatial texture can push billboard solutions outside the tested angular-capacity range.

A Deeper Analysis of Block-Sparse Featurizers

The recently introduced block-sparse featurizer (BSF; Fel et al., 2026) is similar to a sparse autoencoder (SAE), but its atomic unit is a small subspace (a block of directions) rather than a single direction. It is designed for features that live on low-dimensional manifolds, which are especially frequent in vision. This work studies the BSF's strengths and weaknesses, finding how it still somewhat suffers from classic SAE failure modes, like feature splitting and composition. We propose several architectural changes to the BSF, including a Tournament Top-K selection rule that significantly reduces feature splitting, and we also extend the block paradigm to the crosscoder.

CheXtriev: Anatomy-Centered Representation for Case-Based Retrieval of Chest Radiographs

We present CheXtriev, a graph-based, anatomy-aware framework for chest radiograph retrieval. Unlike prior methods focussed on global features, our method leverages graph transformers to extract informative features from specific anatomical regions. Furthermore, it captures spatial context and the interplay between anatomical location and findings. This contextualization, grounded in evidence-based anatomy, results in a richer anatomy-aware representation and leads to more accurate, effective and efficient retrieval, particularly for less prevalent findings. CheXtriv outperforms state-of-the-art global and local approaches by 18% to 26% in retrieval accuracy and 11% to 23% in ranking quality. The code is available at https://github.com/cvit-mip/chextriev.

Efficient, Validation-Free Intrinsic Quality Estimation for Large-Scale Face Recognition Datasets

We propose Intrinsic Quality (IQ), a validation-free metric designed to estimate the inherent potential of face recognition (FR) datasets to produce high-performance models without the need for full-scale training. IQ integrates two components: (i) a Neighbor-Consistency Score that quantifies local identity label agreement via nearest neighbors, and (ii) Global Representation Subspace Complexity (Effective Rank, ER), which captures the underlying embedding geometry and dataset diversity. IQ allows for rapid evaluation using lightweight proxy models or data subsets, facilitating dataset diagnosis and curation prior to resource-intensive full-scale training. We describe an experimental protocol tailored to clean, noisy, and mixed-quality FR datasets, and outline evaluation methodologies to validate IQ's predictive power for downstream performance.
