Activated switching between coexisting limit cycles

Abstract

Noise-activated switching between coexisting stable states is a fundamental mechanism underlying stochastic dynamics in systems ranging from chemical reactions to neural networks. While this phenomenon is well understood for stationary attractors, it remains largely unexplored for limit cycles, whose periodic motion cannot be described by a static potential landscape. Here we experimentally demonstrate activated switching between two coexisting limit-cycle attractors in a driven nonlinear system of coupled resonators. Specifically, we introduce controlled fluctuations to directly observe the rare stochastic transitions between two limit cycles and measure their dependence on noise intensity and driving strength. The measured switching rates are well described by a large-deviation theory, which replaces the conventional activation barrier by the action along the most probable transition path. Our results extend the concept of activated dynamics from stationary to limit-cycle attractors and establish a framework for modeling stochastic transitions between limit cycles in driven-dissipative systems.

The Parry Simplex: Freezing Phase Transitions for Topological Markov Chains

We prove that the pressure function for the Hofbauer potential, defined via the distance to a topological Markov chain (subshift of finite type) X inside the one-sided full shift, exhibits a freezing phase transition. When X is irreducible (in particular when mixing), the post-transition equilibrium measure is unique, equal to the Parry measure of X. When X is reducible with several communicating classes tied for maximal entropy and no chaining among them, the freezing transition persists, but the post-transition equilibrium measure ranges over the full simplex spanned by the Parry measures of the maximal-entropy components.

Analytic Theory on the Space of Blaschke Products: Simultaneous Uniformization and Weil-Petersson Metric

In this paper, we study complex analytic aspects of the moduli space $\Bcal_d^{fm}$ of degree $d\ge2$ fixed-point-marked Blaschke products. We define a complex structure on $\Bcal_d^{fm}$ and prove the simultaneous uniformization theorem for fixed-point-marked quasi-Blaschke products. As an application, we show that the Weil-Petersson semi-norm (which is also referred to as the pressure semi-norm) is non-degenerate along all directions transverse to a holomorphic codimension-1 foliation of $\Bcal^{fm}_d$.

Symbolic dynamics for non-uniformly hyperbolic flows in high dimension

We construct symbolic dynamics for flows with positive speed in any dimension: for each $χ>0$, we code a set that has full measure for every invariant probability measure which is $χ$--hyperbolic. In particular, the coded set contains all hyperbolic periodic orbits with Lyapunov exponents outside of $[-χ,χ]$. This extends the recent work of Buzzi, Crovisier, and Lima for three dimensional flows with positive speed. As an application, we code homoclinic classes of measures by suspensions of irreducible countable Markov shifts, and prove that each such class has at most one probability measure that maximizes the entropy.
