Conjugacy languages in free inverse monoids

Abstract

We initiate the study of conjugacy languages in free inverse monoids. Motivated by the notion of conjugacy languages in groups and the study of conjugacy in semigroups, we introduce the language of shortest representatives of conjugacy classes and study it for free inverse monoids of rank at least $2$ under the natural notion of conjugacy. We show that, contrary to the free group case, where this language is regular, in a free inverse monoid it is neither context-free nor co-context-free. In the monogenic case, this language is context-free. We show that this non-context-freeness comes from elements with nontrivial conjugacy classes. We define an equivalence relation as follows: all elements with a nontrivial conjugacy class are related and elements with trivial conjugacy class are only related to themselves. We call this relation $\mathrm{UConj}$. We show that the language consisting of geodesics representing elements whose conjugacy class is trivial is context-free by providing an explicit context-free grammar generating it. For groups, we show that the language of minimal representatives of $\mathrm{UConj}$ classes is regular if the group is hyperbolic and for right-angled Artin groups with the standard generating set, it is piecewise testable. For virtually abelian groups, we show that there is a generating set for which this language is piecewise excluding and exhibit an example of a virtually abelian group admitting a generating set for which this language is not regular.

Cyclic Subgroup Graph of a Group

A cyclic subgroup graph of a group is a graph whose vertices are cyclic subgroups of the group, and two distinct vertices are adjacent if one is a maximal subgroup of the other. In this paper, we examine several graph-theoretic properties of cyclic subgroup graphs, including bipartiteness, regularity, girth, diameter, and vertex degrees. We also classify all groups whose cyclic subgroup graphs are connected, complete, star graphs, trees, or paths. Further, we examine the cyclic subgroup graph for specific families of groups such as cyclic, dihedral, dicyclic, generalized quaternion, minimal non-cyclic and nilpotent groups. We also discuss the relationship of cyclic subgroup graph with the power graph and the enhanced power graph. Additionally, we give a relationship between a cyclic subgroup graph and a poset.

Blocks with a single automorphism orbit of irreducible Brauer characters

Fix a prime $p$. Let $G\trianglelefteq\tilde G$ be finite groups such that $|\tilde G:G|$ is a power of $p$, and let $\tilde b$ be a block of $\tilde G$ with abelian defect groups covering a block $b$ of $G$. We prove that $\tilde b$ is inertial whenever $\IBr(b)$ is a single $\Aut(G)_b$-orbit. This verifies the abelian-defect case of the Kessar--Linckelmann conjecture. As a key ingredient, we further show that a block of a finite quasisimple group with a single automorphism orbit of irreducible Brauer characters has abelian defect groups. As applications, we prove the blockwise Alperin weight conjecture for blocks with exactly one irreducible Brauer character and establish Puig's nilpotency conjecture.

On a question of Navarro on the field of values of characters of solvable groups

In a 2023 survey paper, Gabriel Navarro posed the following problem: Given an irreducible character $χ$ of some solvable group $G$ where $χ$ either is 2-rational or has odd degree, does there exist some $g \in G$ such that $\mathbb{Q}(χ(g)) = \mathbb{Q}(χ)$? When $χ$ is imprimitive, the answer is no in general. In the case where $χ$ is primitive (or even factorizable as a product of $p$-special characters), we are able to show that there exists $g \in G$ such that $\Gal(\mathbb{Q}(χ)/\mathbb{Q}(χ(g)))$ is an elementary abelian 2-group. We are then able to show that the answer to Navarro's problem is yes when we further assume that either $χ$ is 2-rational, $c(χ)$ is divisible by at most two primes, or $χ(1)$ is a power of an odd prime.
