Average soft X-ray surface brightness profile of massive galaxy clusters in Magneticum simulations

Abstract

The self-similar growth of massive galaxy clusters suggests that radial profiles of their key thermodynamic properties should have identical shapes after proper mass- and redshift-dependent re-scaling. This property, tested within the virial radius on samples of well-studied individual objects, together with clear and robust observational characteristics such as sensitivity and background accounting, enables the possibility of stacking observations that can be confronted with identically-derived population-averaged predictions from theory or numerical simulations at large radii. Such a comparison not only eliminates effects of inevitable stochasticity in properties of individual objects, but also allows one to reach higher sensitivity for the faintest regions on the outskirts of the clusters. In this study, we conduct a one-to-one comparison of the observed and simulated average soft X-ray surface brightness profiles of several dozen massive galaxy clusters at low redshift. We find a very good out-of-the-box agreement between the 0.3 - 2.3 keV surface brightness profile of stacked galaxy clusters recently measured by SRG/eROSITA and the corresponding predictions from the Magneticum cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, which are known to reproduce other scaling relations observed for massive galaxy clusters. A significant difference between the observed and simulated profiles is present in the very central region, where effective implementation of the AGN feedback likely results in excessive gas redistribution within the core. The simulations predict a very noisy surface brightness profile beyond several times the virial radius of the cluster, with the mean signal being orders of magnitude lower than the local radially-flat but strongly fluctuating emission background, meaning that a proper detection of this component would be very challenging even with larger samples in the future.

DESI Dark Secrets

We critically examine the results of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which provide evidence that dark energy may not be quantum vacuum energy. We find that the best-fit $w_0w_a$ models for dark energy, which underpin the claim, have unusual behavior. They achieve a maximum energy density around $z\simeq 0.5 $ and rapidly decrease before and after (this redshift is also the pivot point for the DESI results). We show that this could be explained by the fact that the $w_0w_a$ parameterization is limited in its ability to model dark energy as it only allows four generic behaviors -- monotonically increasing or decreasing, or with a maximum or minimum -- and $w_a \not= 0$ and $w=-1$ can only be achieved at a minimum or maximum of the dark energy. Further, $w_0w_a$ is a one-parameter characterization of scalar-field models and it cannot represent them to the precision needed for the DESI results. We explore scalar-field models characterized by one dimensionless parameter $β$, which for $β\rightarrow 0$, reduce to $Λ$CDM. None of these models fit the DESI data significantly better than $Λ$CDM or as well as the best-fit DESI $w_0w_a$ models. We also examine the CMB and SN data that strengthen the DESI case for evolving dark energy. The combination of DESI, CMB, and SN data favors a 95\% credible interval $β= 0.33 - 0.96$, providing weak evidence for a scalar-field explanation for dark energy. While the DESI data prefer $w_0w_a$, the SN data prefer a scalar field, and together they favor a $w_0w_a$ model. Finally, the unusual behavior of the best-fit DESI $w_0w_a$ models could arise due to the matter density not varying as expected or an unaccounted-for component of energy density in the Universe. In sum, the evidence for evolving dark energy is intriguing but not conclusive, and at this point, the DESI results raise more questions than they answer.

Hidden Vela Supercluster Revealed by First Hybrid Redshift & Peculiar Velocity Reconstruction

A large fraction of the extragalactic sky is obscured by foreground dust and stars along the plane of the Milky Way, leaving a major gap (~ 20%) in whole-sky maps of large-scale structures -- an incompleteness that is even more severe for peculiar velocity samples. This has long limited an unambiguous interpretation of observed cosmic flows and their connection to the underlying mass-density field. We present a new hybrid reconstruction methodology which combines 65,518 galaxy peculiar velocity distances from the CF4++ catalogue (Courtois2025) with 8283 new galaxy redshifts observed near the southern Galactic plane (|b| <= 10 degrees) Zone of Avoidance. A major advance is the inclusion of 2176 high-sensitivity, interferometric HI redshifts obtained with the SARAO MeerKAT telescope which for the first time provide coverage of the innermost 3degrees-wide strip of the southern ZOA and to unprecedented depth. This hybrid redshifts & peculiar velocities approach yields a substantially revised view of the inferred overdensities in and around the ZOA. In particular, the Vela supercluster emerges as a dominant mass concentration, rivaling the Shapley concentration and exceeding the mass associated with Laniakea and the Great Attractor region. With a total mass of 33.8 10^16 Msol, a characteristic radius of 70 hmpc, and a double core morphology at a distance of 189 hmpc, Vela dominates the mass budget and gravitational influence of the southern Zone of Avoidance. These results provide the most complete and dynamically consistent picture to date of the southern Zone of Avoidance and demonstrate the transformative potential of hybrid reconstruction techniques tailored for the next generation of large-scale surveys.

Precision Kinematic Sunyaev--Zel'dovich Measurements Across Halo Mass and Redshift with DESI DR2 and ACT DR6: Part I. Luminous Red Galaxies

We present the most precise measurements of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect around luminous red galaxies to date, detecting the signal at $18σ$ significance in both harmonic and configuration space. Our analysis cross-correlates 2.4 million spectroscopic LRGs from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) DR2 sample with Data Release 6 (DR6) of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). We develop a novel harmonic-space cross-correlation approach using momentum-weighted kSZ templates, yielding nearly uncorrelated bandpowers within a framework consistent with other large-scale structure analyses. By incorporating the LRG halo occupation distribution (HOD) and its uncertainty, we convert measured galaxy gas profiles into halo gas profiles and provide generalized Navarro-Frenk-White (GNFW) fitting profiles, providing empirical targets for tuning feedback efficiency in hydrodynamical simulations and for baryonic modeling in large-scale structure analyses. We find strong evidence that gas profiles do not trace dark matter, providing direct evidence for gas redistribution beyond gravitational collapse. Comparing to hydrodynamical simulations, our measurements favor feedback efficiencies exceeding those in the Battaglia profile, suggesting more efficient gas ejection in group-scale halos than previously predicted. Splitting by redshift, we detect the kSZ signal at SNR $\approx 5$--$10$ in each of four bins and find amplitude evolution consistent with the expected decline in mean halo mass at fixed comoving number density. Splitting by stellar mass, we study the scaling of kSZ amplitude with galaxy properties. Together with BGS and ELG measurements in Paper II, these results span $0.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.6$ across three galaxy populations, demonstrating the potential of spectroscopic kSZ to map circumgalactic gas and constrain baryonic feedback.
