Measurements of charged-particle pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions in O+O and Ne+Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\text{NN}}} = 5.36$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Abstract

Measurements of charged-particle transverse momentum spectra, multiplicity, and mean transverse momentum are presented as a function of pseudorapidity and collision centrality in O+O and Ne+Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\text{NN}}}= 5.36$ TeV using 27.7 $μ\text{b}^{-1}$ and 53.1 $μ\text{b}^{-1}$ data sets recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The collision centrality is characterized by the total transverse energy measured in the ATLAS forward calorimeters. The kinematics of charged particles are reconstructed with the inner detector over the fiducial pseudorapidity and transverse momentum ranges $|η|<2.5$ and $0.27 < p_{\text{T}} < 5$ GeV using data from the ATLAS inner detector. The per-event charged-particle pseudorapidity density $dn/dη$ and mean transverse momentum $\langle p_{\text{T}}\rangle$ are measured over this fiducial range as a function of $η$. The results are reported in 5%-wide centrality intervals covering the 5-80% centrality range, and in 1%-wide intervals covering the 0-5% centrality range. Invariant per-event yields are evaluated as a function of $η$ and $p_{\text{T}}$. Their $p_{\text{T}}$ dependence is fitted to estimate extrapolated $dn/dη$ and $\langle p_{\text{T}}\rangle$ values over $0 < p_{\text{T}} < 5$ GeV. To evaluate the impact of using pseudorapidity instead of rapidity, measurements are also performed as a function of rapidity computed using a pion mass hypothesis. The fiducial and extrapolated results are compared with hydrodynamic calculations.

Comment on "Non-Monotonicity of Transverse-Momentum Correlations in Au+Au Collisions at RHIC"

Recent measurements of two-particle transverse-momentum correlations, $C_{p_T}$, in Au+Au collisions have revealed a statistically significant non-monotonic beam-energy dependence over the range $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.0$--$7.7$~GeV that has been interpreted as potentially indicative of critical phenomena associated with a critical end point (CEP) in the QCD phase diagram. This interpretation is assessed in light of the absence of a controlled framework establishing $C_{p_T}$ as a quantitative proxy for the underlying critical response. The implications of this limitation are examined by considering the expected finite-size and finite-time modification of critical fluctuations, substantial non-critical dynamical contributions, the lack of demonstrated critical scaling, and the sizeable discrepancy between the CEP region inferred from the observed $C_{p_T}$ non-monotonicity and that constrained by susceptibility-based measurements and finite-size scaling analyses. Taken together, these considerations indicate that the observed $C_{p_T}$ non-monotonicity does not, by itself, establish a critical origin nor provide reliable quantitative constraints on the existence or location of a possible CEP.

Exploring nucleon spin by Drell-Yan process

Contributions of parton's orbital motion to the nucleon spin are encoded in the transverse-momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Currently these distributions are accessed through the lepton-induced processes such as semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and deeply virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS). The (un)polarized Drell-Yan process with hadron beams provides a unique and complementary probe, enabling critical tests of the universality properties of TMDs and GPDs in the space-like and time-like approaches. This talk reviews recent results of TMDs obtained from the Drell-Yan measurements and discusses future prospects for accessing nucleon GPDs through measurements of the exclusive pion-induced Drell-Yan process at J-PARC.

First Measurement of Near-Threshold J/ψ Photoproduction on the Neutron

We report the first measurement of the total and t-differential cross sections for near-threshold J/$ψ$ photoproduction on the neutron, obtained with the CLAS12 detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The measurements, performed using a liquid-deuterium target, also provide the incoherent total and t-differential cross sections on the bound proton, enabling the first direct comparison of near-threshold J/$ψ$ photoproduction on bound protons and neutrons. Interpreted within Vector Meson Dominance, holographic QCD, and GPD-based frameworks, the data allow for the investigation of the gluonic structure of bound nucleons. A comparison with free proton results reveals hints of modifications to the gluon structure of nucleons in the nuclear medium, within the assumptions of the extraction and on the underlying production mechanism. The comparison of bound neutron and bound proton cross sections provides new constraints on the near-threshold J/$ψ$ production mechanism, which is crucial in order to establish J/$ψ$ photoproduction as a probe of the nucleon's gluonic structure.
