A Machine Learning-Driven Solution for Denoising Inertial Confinement Fusion Images

Abstract

Neutron imaging is essential for diagnosing and optimizing inertial confinement fusion implosions at the National Ignition Facility. Due to the required 10-micrometer resolution, however, neutron image require image reconstruction using iterative algorithms. For low-yield sources, the images may be degraded by various types of noise. Gaussian and Poisson noise often coexist within one image, obscuring fine details and blurring the edges where the source information is encoded. Traditional denoising techniques, such as filtering and thresholding, can inadvertently alter critical features or reshape the noise statistics, potentially impacting the ultimate fidelity of the iterative image reconstruction pipeline. However, recent advances in synthetic data production and machine learning have opened new opportunities to address these challenges. In this study, we present an unsupervised autoencoder with a Cohen-Daubechies- Feauveau (CDF 97) wavelet transform in the latent space, designed to suppress for mixed Gaussian-Poisson noise while preserving essential image features. The network successfully denoises neutron imaging data. Benchmarking against both simulated and experimental NIF datasets demonstrates that our approach achieves lower reconstruction error and superior edge preservation compared to conventional filtering methods such as Block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D). By validating the effectiveness of unsupervised learning for denoising neutron images, this study establishes a critical first step towards fully AI-driven, end-to-end reconstruction frameworks for ICF diagnostics.

A survey of AI-generated voices and their detection

The ability of artificial intelligence (AI) models to generate highly realistic human voices has advanced rapidly. These technologies power accessibility tools, virtual assistants and creative applications, but they also enable harmful uses, including impersonation, fraud and disinformation. Recent incidents of voice cloning scams targeting businesses and political leaders underscore the urgent need for robust safeguards. Unlike image and video deepfakes, the detection of synthetic voices poses unique challenges due to the complexity of phonetics, prosody and auditory perception. This survey offers a comprehensive overview of AI voice generation and detection methods, encompassing both the technical foundations and the latest state-of-the-art advances. This study also identifies key open challenges, benchmark resources and future directions to make this survey useful for future researchers.

When Saying No Makes Better Videos: Designing Dual Gatekeeping for Pedagogically Grounded AI Content Creation

To prevent the adoption of aesthetically polished but pedagogically flawed AI content, we study a video authoring pipeline featuring two layers of structured refusal. The first layer empowers educators to iteratively reshape AI scripts based on multimedia learning theory, while the second employs automated metrics to flag violations in instructional coherence and narrative-visual synchronization. While neither layer is exhaustive, their synergy ensures that principled resistance--the act of deferring AI output until it meets rigorous standards--becomes a catalyst for higher quality. Evaluation combining a study with 23 educators across 3 topics and automated metrics across 7 topics drawn from established science and philosophy curricula shows that both layers independently improve the same instructional dimensions, suggesting that thoughtful resistance and generative AI are not opposites but partners.

Measuring Similarity between Artistic and AI Generated Images using Siamese Neural Networks

AI-generated art has sparked debates around potential plagiarism, as these images may closely resemble existing artworks. This research quantifies the similarity between original pieces and AI-generated counterparts, particularly those produced by the Stable Diffusion XL Refiner 1.0. We use Siamese Networks with frozen CLIP encoders and cosine similarity optimized through triplet loss. A dataset of paired original and generated images was built using image-to-image generation and custom prompts, enriched with semantic descriptors and BLIP-2 captions. Prior studies report up to 81\% style replication and 90\% visual similarity. Our results show high discriminative performance: training accuracy reached 99.9\%, and the best model configuration achieved 99.4\% test accuracy with strong inter-class separation ($δμ$ = 0.677), demonstrating the effectiveness of our semantic-visual embeddings.
