Note on a conjecture of Sárközy on special sequences

Abstract

Let $α>1$ be an irrational number and $k\ge 2$ a positive integer. Let $f(x)$ be a polynomial with positive integer coefficients. Solving a 2001 problem of Sárközy on special sequences, Hegyvári proved in 2003 that there exists an infinite sequence $A$ with density $\frac{1}{k}-\frac{1}{kα}$ such that $$ \big\{f(a_1)+\ldots+f(a_k): a_i\in A, 1\le i\le k\big\}\cap \big\{\lfloor nα\rfloor: n\in \mathbb{N}\big\}=\emptyset. $$ Hegyvári also proved that the density given by him is optimal for $k=2$. In this article, we show that the density $\frac{1}{k}-\frac{1}{kα}$ given by Hegyvári is actually optimal for all $k\ge 2$.

Alternating generalizations of Mizuno's product formula and the modified gamma functions

Let $\tildeΓ(x)$ denote the modified gamma function recently introduced by the authors as an alternating analogue of the classical Euler gamma function. In this paper, we establish a complete alternating generalization of Mizuno's celebrated product formula: \begin{equation*} \prod_{m=0}^{\infty}\left(\prod_{j=1}^{n}(m+x_{j})^{(-1)^{m}}\right) =\frac{\left(\sqrt{\fracπ{2}}\right)^n}{\prod_{j=1}^{n}\tildeΓ(x_{j})} =\prod_{j=1}^{n}\left(\prod_{m=0}^{\infty}(m+x_{j})^{(-1)^{m}}\right). \end{equation*} This identity, which we refer to as the alternating Mizuno formula, replaces the classical gamma function $Γ$ and the constant $\sqrt{2π}$ by their natural alternating counterparts $\tildeΓ$ and $\sqrt{π/2}$. As immediate consequences, we recover the alternating Lerch formula and, by specializing to $x=2$ and multiplying by $2$, a remarkably concise derivation of Wallis' famous product \begin{equation*} \frac{2\cdot2}{1\cdot3}\cdot\frac{4\cdot4}{3\cdot5}\cdot\frac{6\cdot6}{5\cdot7}\cdot\cdots=\fracπ{2}. \end{equation*} More generally, by exploiting polynomial factorizations, we derive Kurokawa--Wakayama type formulas for alternating products over cyclotomic fields. Beyond these product identities, we investigate the multiple alternating gamma functions $\barΓ_N(x)$, obtaining explicit factorizations in terms of Barnes' multiple gamma functions, closed-form evaluations involving the Glaisher--Kinkelin constant, and a Gauss--Legendre type multiplication formula. Finally, we introduce an alternating analogue of Shintani's double sine function and establish a clean arithmetic dichotomy: for algebraic $τ$, its special values at integer points are algebraic precisely when $τ$ is rational, and transcendental otherwise.

Counting integral points near curves: an exposition

We give a detailed account of the recent work of Hickman and Srivastava on counting integral points in a $ δ$-neighbourhood of a dilate $ q \mathcal{M} $ of a non-degenerate curve $ \mathcal{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^{n} $, $ n \ge 3 $. Our aim is expository: we simplify the proof, provide additional details, refine the statement of the theorem and provide calculations from a more fundamental perspective. We also formulate a new conjecture based on recent work of Chen, Seeger, Srivastava and Technau.
