Uniform Hyperbolicity, Bandgaps and Edge Modes in Aperiodic Systems of Subwavelength Resonators

Abstract

We aim to characterise the spectral distributions of bi-infinite, semi-infinite, and finite aperiodic one-dimensional arrays of subwavelength resonators, constructed by sampling from a finite library of building blocks. By adopting the modern formalism of uniform hyperbolicity, we are able to strengthen and rigorously prove a Saxon-Hutner-type result, fully characterising the spectral gaps of the composite bi-infinite aperiodic system in terms of its constituent blocks. Crucial to this approach is a change of basis from transfer matrices to propagation matrices, allowing for a block-level characterisation. This approach also enables an explicit characterisation of edge-induced eigenmodes in the semi-infinite setting. Finally, we leverage finite section methods for Jacobi operators to extend our results to finite systems - providing strict bounds for their spectra in terms of their constituent blocks.

$d$-dimensional spherical ferromagnets in random fields: Metastates, continuous symmetry breaking, and spin-glass features

We study the large-volume behavior of the spherical model for $d$-dimensional local spins, in the presence of $d$-dimensional random fields, for $d\geq 2$. We compare two models, one with volume-scaled random fields, and another one with non-scaled random fields, on the level of Aizenman-Wehr metastates, Newman-Stein metastates, as well as overlap distributions. We show that in $d\geq 2$ the metastates are fully supported on a continuity of random product states, with weights which we describe, for both models. For the non-scaled random fields, the set of a.s. cluster points of Gibbs measures contains these product states, but behaves differently in the 'recurrent' spin dimension $d=2$ where it also contains non-trivial mixtures of tilted measures. For the scaled model, moreover the overlap distribution displays spin-glass characteristics, as it is non-self averaging, and shows replica symmetry breaking, although it is ultrametric if and only if $d=1$. For $d\geq 2$ it oscillates chaotically on a set of continuous distributions for large volumes, while the limiting set contains only discrete distributions in $d=1$. Our results are based on concentration estimates, analysis of Gibbs measures in finite but large volumes, and the asymptotics of $d$-dimensional random walks and their spherical projections.

Where solitons are in a KdV soliton gas

The Korteweg-De Vries (KdV) equation, a paradigmatic integrable model, admits multi-soliton solutions where localised profiles interact by elastic, factorised scattering. But when solitons interact, their shapes are modified, and individual solitons cannot be identified anymore, a key problem in soliton gases where one needs a density of solitons per unit distance. This is the question of quasi-particles in integrable systems: can we locate asymptotic objects at finite times and densities in the macroscopic limit of infinite number of solitons? A good definition of solitons' positions should guarantee that the field in any mesoscopic neighbourhood is determined by solitons lying there. We solve this problem for the KdV equation. We define solitons' positions as explicit solutions to the semiclassical Bethe equations. We show a density lower bound generalising the hard-rod condition and reminiscent of the condensate lower-bound known from soliton gases. We construct a fluid-cell projection, that projects out solitons lying outside mesoscopic regions, and show that the result is a field composed solely of the remaining solitons, unchanged in this region and exponentially supported there. From this we show that in the weak limit, conserved densities are given by the empirical density for these solitons' positions. Thus we have associated a kinetic theory of quasi-particles to the KdV equation. We also find new bounds on the growth of the multi-soliton support and on the supremum of the field and its derivatives. The results hold under natural conditions on spectral and impact parameters, and no randomness or large-wavelength conditions are required. Our proof is based on a novel solitonic tau function. This is a first step towards rigorously deriving the kinetic equation of the KdV soliton gas, first proposed by Gennady El in 2003. The methods are generalisable to other solitonic models.

Rapid mixing for Gibbs measures in Riemannian manifolds

Langevin dynamics on Riemannian manifolds is analyzed. Conditions ensuring the existence of a suitable logarithmic Sobolev inequality (rapid mixing to the Gibbs measure) are identified. These conditions involve the curvature of the manifold, the inverse temperature, escaping directions from saddle points, and exclude barren plateaus and spurious local minima. We show that when these conditions are met, mixing times polynomial in the dimension of the manifold are achievable. This result is obtained through a relation between Langevin processes in the domain and in the image of a Riemannian submersion. Such a relation can be of independent interest.
