Studying magnetic circular vortex dichroism effect for photoionization of Rydberg atoms with vortex photons

Abstract

Rydberg atoms, renowned for their exceptional quantum properties, hold significant importance in quantum physics. The photoionization of Rydberg atoms serves as a critical tool for probing their unique characteristics. In this work, we investigate the photoionization dynamics of hydrogen-like Rydberg alkali atoms interacting with vortex photons-a class of structured light carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum. This process gives rise to novel quantum phenomena distinct from conventional photoionization processes. Our results reveal that vortex photons exhibit exceptional sensitivity to the magnetic moments of Rydberg atoms, positioning them as a powerful spectroscopic tool for investigating Rydberg magnetism. It is also demonstrated that the initial photon energy must be carefully selected to observe significant experimental results. Furthermore, the photoionization process displays strong angular momentum selectivity, preferentially favoring configurations where the photon total angular momentum and atomic magnetic moment are aligned. This pronounced asymmetry directly manifests the chiral nature of the vortex photon-Rydberg atom collisions.

Diagonal Born--Oppenheimer correction in strong magnetic fields: finite-difference approach for light diatomic molecules

The influence of the diagonal Born--Oppenheimer correction (DBOC) on the electronic structure of light diatomic molecules subjected to strong magnetic fields is investigated. H$_2$, HeH$^+$, and LiH are considered, using both the Hartree--Fock (HF) approximation and configuration interaction with single and double excitations (CISD). The analysis covers magnetic field strengths up to $B_\parallel = 0.2$ a.u. ($4.7\times10^{4}$~T), relevant to astrophysical conditions near magnetic white dwarfs. Although the correction noticeably shifts total electronic energies, it varies smoothly with internuclear distance and depends only weakly on the field, so that it enters the vibrational transition frequencies as a nearly field-independent offset, shifting the fundamental interval by about $1$~cm$^{-1}$ and the higher levels by up to $15$ cm$^{-1}$. These shifts exceed the $0.1$--$2.0$ cm$^{-1}$ accuracy currently attainable for molecular lines in the atmospheres of magnetic white dwarfs. Comparison of HF and CISD results shows that electron correlation has a non-negligible effect on the DBOC, most pronounced for the strongly ionic LiH bond.

Electron spectra from strong-field enhanced ionization in heavy water

Strong-field enhanced ionization (EI) is a phenomenon in which stretching of interatomic bonds into a distorted molecular geometry leads to an increase in the tunneling ionization rate driven by a strong field. While the nuclear dynamics leading to EI are well established, the electron dynamics of the ionization step remain largely unexplored. Isolating the momentum distribution of the electrons involved in EI is critical to fully characterizing the phenomenon. We have measured the electron momentum distribution associated with EI in triple ionization of D$_2$O using 6-fs pulse pairs together with full fragment momentum imaging and electron-ion correlation methods. We find that the EI electron momentum distribution differs substantially from that of standard strong-field tunneling from molecules, exhibiting an increased yield of electrons with large momentum in the direction of the laser polarization, and a change from the expected Gaussian distribution. These observations indicate that the instantaneous EI tunneling rate is maximized at a critical value of the laser electric field, rather than at the peak of an optical cycle. This finding distinguishes EI from Keldysh tunneling rate predictions, where tunneling rate increases monotonically with field strength. These pronounced differences between EI and non-EI electron spectra are critical tests of models of enhanced ionization and suggest a route towards control of the sub-cycle timing of electron emission.

Phase-Sensitive Heterodyne Detection of MW using EIT Harmonics in Rydberg Atoms

We investigate the generation and characterization of higher-order harmonics in the probe-laser absorption arising from nonlinear interactions in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) ladder system involving Rydberg states and driven by two microwave fields in the heterodyne configuration. We characterize the amplitude and phase of the generated harmonics as a function of the relative frequency and phase of the applied microwave fields. The phase of the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$ harmonic follows the relation $ϕ_n=nϕ$, demonstrating phase multiplication and suggesting that higher-order harmonics may offer an enhanced phase response for phase-sensitive measurements. We further characterize the harmonic amplitudes and bandwidths and find that the measured bandwidths are significantly larger than the intrinsic Rydberg-state linewidth, consistent with power broadening under the experimental conditions. The experimental observations are supported by density-matrix calculations, which reproduce the key features of the measured harmonic response.
