Existence and multiplicity of normalized solutions to a large class of elliptic equations on bounded domains with general boundary conditions

Abstract

In this paper, by adapting the perturbation method, we study the existence and multiplicity of normalized solutions for the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -Δu = λu + f(u)\quad & \text{in } Ω, \mathcal{B}_{α,ζ,γ}u = 0 & \text{on } \partial Ω, \int_Ω |u|^2\,dx = μ, \end{array} \right. \leqno{(P)^μ_{α,ζ,γ}} $$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ ($N \geq 1$) is a smooth bounded domain, $μ>0$ is prescribed, $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ is a part of the unknown which appears as a Lagrange multiplier, $f,g:\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ are continuous functions satisfying some technical conditions. The boundary operator $\mathcal{B}_{α,ζ,γ}$ is defined by $$ \mathcal{B}_{α,ζ,γ}u=αu+ζ\frac{\partial u}{\partial η}-γg(u), $$ where $α,ζ,γ\in \{0,1\}$ and $η$ denotes the outward unit normal on $\partialΩ$. Moreover, we highlight several further applications of our approach, including the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with critical exponential growth in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$, the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with magnetic fields, the biharmonic equations, and the Choquard equations, among others.

Global existence of Lagrangian solutions to the ionic Vlasov--Poisson system

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the ionic Vlasov--Poisson (IVP) system for a broad class of initial data. To this end, we establish well-posedness and stability estimates for the Poisson--Boltzmann equation $-ΔΦ= ρ-e^Φ$ provided $ρ\in L_+^p$ with $p>1$, whereas previous approaches required $p>\frac{d}{2}$. Building upon these results, we construct global-in-time renormalized/Lagrangian solutions to the IVP system.

The Ekman spiral in primitive equations with wind-driven boundary conditions and Coriolis force

In this article we investigate the relationship of the 3D incompressible, primitive equations with wind-driven boundary conditions and Coriolis force and the Ekman spiral. We identify three distinct regimes. In the first one, we show that every solution converges exponentially fast to the Ekman spiral as $t \to + \infty$. In particular, this implies that the Ekman spiral is the unique equilibrium of the system. In the second regime, we prove nonlinear stability of the Ekman spiral, and in the third one, we show nonlinear instability of the Ekman spiral.

A State-Space Representation of Coupled Linear Multivariate PDEs and Stability Analysis using SDP

Recently, it has been shown that stability analysis and control of coupled Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in a single spatial variable can be more conveniently performed using the Partial Integral Equation (PIE) representation. This PIE offers an equivalent, state-space representation of the PDE on the Hilbert space $L_{2}$, and is parameterized by an algebra of Partial Integral (PI) operators, allowing e.g. stability to be analyzed by solving a linear operator inequality on PI operator variables. In this paper, we show how this PIE framework for univariate PDEs can be extended inductively to multivariate PDEs on a hyper-rectangle. Specifically, assuming the boundary conditions defining the domain of the PDE to be decoupled along distinct spatial directions, we propose a readily verifiable condition for existence of a bijection between the PDE domain and $L_{2}$. We derive an explicit expression for the map defining this bijection, and use this map to construct an equivalent PIE representation for a broad class of linear multivariate PDEs. Next, we embed the parameters defining this PIE representation in a class of multivariate PI operators, and prove that this class forms a $*$-algebra---allowing PI operator inequalities for stability analysis, estimation, and control of univariate PDEs to be similarly formulated for multivariate PDEs. Finally, we show how such an operator inequality for stability analysis of multivariate PDEs can be solved with semidefinite programming, using a positive matrix parameterization of positive semidefinite multivariate PI operators. This framework for representation and stability analysis of multivariate PDEs is incorporated in the PIETOOLS software, and applied to analyze stability of 2D heat, wave, and plate equations, obtaining accurate bounds on the rate of decay.
