Shape sensitivity analysis of the heat equation and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map

Abstract

We study a Dirichlet problem for the heat equation in a domain containing an interior hole. The domain has a fixed outer boundary and a variable inner boundary determined by a diffeomorphism $ϕ$. We analyze the maps that assign to the infinite-dimensional shape parameter $ϕ$ the corresponding solution and its normal derivative, and we prove that both are smooth. Motivated by an application to an inverse problem, we then compute the differential with respect to $ϕ$ of the normal derivative of the solution on the exterior boundary.

Quantitative regularity for parabolic De Giorgi classes

We consider Parabolic De Giorgi classes for which we give a fully quantitative proof of the H\''older continuity for functions in these classes using the De Giorgi method. The main result is a quantitative proof of the intermediate value lemma, also known as the second lemma of De Giorgi. This paper is self-contained.

On the chaotic behavior of the Lagrangian flow of the 2D Navier-Stokes system with bounded degenerate noise

We consider a fluid governed by the randomly forced 2D Navier-Stokes system. The force is bounded and highly degenerate, acting directly only on a small number of Fourier modes, and satisfies natural decomposability and observability properties. We prove that the Lagrangian flow associated with this system exhibits chaotic behavior, characterized by the strict positivity of the top Lyapunov exponent. To achieve this, we develop a new abstract criterion for random dynamical systems that enables one to derive the positivity of the top Lyapunov exponent and exponential mixing from controllability properties of the associated nonlinear and linearized deterministic systems. In particular, our mixing criterion removes the analyticity assumption required in previous works and establishes an exponential rate of convergence in the case where the unperturbed dynamics does not admit a unique globally stable equilibrium.

Dissipative relativistic fluid flow: A simple Lorentz invariant causal model capturing entropy shocks in its zero viscosity limit

Zero viscosity limits, by identifying the physical (Lax admissible) shocks, are a cornerstone in the design of analytical and numerical schemes for the study of classical shock waves. For relativistic fluid flow, however, the underlying Laplacian based dissipation mechanism (so-called ``artificial viscosity'') violates Lorentz invariance, the fundamental principle of Special Relativity. In this paper we show that replacing the Laplacian on conserved quantities by the wave operator on the fluid four-velocity alone, provides a simplest Lorentz invariant description of dissipative relativistic fluid flow. We prove the resulting equations are causal and well-posed in one spatial dimension. We establish non-linear dissipativity and global-in-time existence of smooth solutions with small data in $H^s\cap L^1$, based on a Kawashima compensated energy method; (this appears to be the first such result for relativistic dissipation in 1-D). Moreover, we prove shock waves have profiles (a unique viscous travelling wave approximation in $L^2$) if and only if the shock wave is Lax admissible, and we prove that entropy production of travelling wave solutions is positive if and only if they obey the speed of light bound. This establishes the dissipative relativistic Euler equations introduced in this paper as a viable model for the study of relativistic shock waves in the zero viscosity limit, both in analytical and numerical approaches, consistent with the laws of Relativity.
