The fundamental theorem of the local theory for non-smooth curves

Abstract

We extend the classical fundamental theorem of the local theory of smooth curves to a wider class of non-smooth data. Curvature and torsion are prescribed in terms of the distributional derivative measures of two given functions of bounded variation. The essentially unique non-smooth curve solution has both finite total curvature and total absolute torsion. In case of continuous data, we preliminarly discuss a more general problem involving a linear system of distributional derivative equations.

Topological and geometric rigidity of nonnegatively curved submanifolds

We investigate the topology and geometry of compact submanifolds in space forms of nonnegative curvature satisfying a lower bound on the sectional curvature that depends only on the length of the mean curvature vector of the immersion. We show that this condition imposes strong constraints on either the topology or geometry of the submanifold. More precisely, we prove that, for dimensions $n\ge5$, the manifold is homeomorphic to a sphere, whereas in dimension four it is either diffeomorphic to $\mathbb S^4$ or isometric to $\mathbb CP^2$, in which case the immersion is the standard embedding into $\mathbb S^7$ followed by an umbilical inclusion. Additionally, we provide examples showing that the spherical conclusion cannot in general be strengthened to an extrinsic rigidity statement, since there exist many geometrically distinct spheres satisfying the pinching condition.

Uniqueness of the asymptotic limits for Ricci-flat manifolds with linear volume growth

Under natural assumptions on curvature and cross section, we establish the uniqueness of asymptotic limits and the exponential convergence rate for complete noncollapsed Ricci flat manifolds with linear volume growth, which are known to only admit cylindrical asymptotic limits. In particular, our results show that all asymptotically cylindrical Calabi--Yau manifolds converge exponentially to their asymptotic limits, thereby answering affirmatively a question by Haskins--Hein--Nordström. In dimension four, these assumptions hold automatically, yielding unconditional uniqueness and convergence thus our result strengthens those of Chen--Chen, who proved exponential convergence to its asymptotic limit space for ALH instantons. Compared to cones, the greatest challenge is to bound the multiplicity two zero modes and oscillatory negative eigenvalue modes, which are new phenomena for cylinders. To overcome the new challenge, we develop a new technical tool, the constant mean curvature foliation.
