Theoretical Study of Charge Transport Properties of Curved PAH Organic Semiconductors

Abstract

Curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exhibit distinctive geometric and electronic structures, rendering them highly promising in addressing issues of solubility and air stability, which are faced for large linear arene $π$-conjugated organic semiconductors. In this study, a series of surface-curved PAHs and the heteroatom doped derivatives are selected and designed, and the relationship between electronic structure and charge transport properties of these molecules is investigated by using density functional theory (DFT). And the effects of sulfur/oxygen, nitrogen and boron doping on the charge transport performance of curved PAH semiconductors are explored. The results show that curved PAHs exhibit improved solubility and stability, with the degree of molecular curvature significantly affecting the material's transport properties.

Quantum-accurate atomistic modeling of enzyme catalysis using a machine learned potential

Electronic rearrangements associated with bond forming/breaking in catalytic enzymes require quantum mechanical (QM) treatment beyond classical molecular mechanics (MM). Hybrid QM/MM methods enable tractable simulations but require system-specific setup and are sensitive to the QM region choice and treatment of the QM/MM interface. We demonstrate quantum-accurate treatment of all-atom, complete enzymes in explicit solvent comprising up to 54k atoms and 1 microsecond of total simulation time using the machine-learned interatomic potential (MLIP) eSEN-omol. We reproduce experimental barrier trends for Claisen rearrangement in chorismate mutase, resolve critical intermediate states in PETase catalyzed polymer depolymerization, and distinguish mechanistic alternatives for metal-activated phosphoryl transfer in nucleoside diphosphate kinase. We realize 1000x speedups relative to typical QM/MM calculations without system-specific tuning. These results establish MLIPs as a practical route to QM-accurate simulations of enzyme catalysis.

Analytic Gradients and Nonadiabatic Couplings for Device-Resident DMRG-QD-NEVPT2 Through Conical Intersections on a Consumer GPU

Nonadiabatic dynamics through a conical intersection requires both static and dynamic correlation and, at every geometry, an excited-state gradient and interstate nonadiabatic coupling (NACME). Analytic multireference derivatives at this level have been confined to datacenter-scale hardware. We report device-resident \mbox{DMRG-QD-NEVPT2} with analytic gradients and NACMEs within the $8$\,GB of a consumer GPU: a density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) active-space reference supplies the static correlation, and quasi-degenerate SC-NEVPT2 dresses it through a multi-state effective Hamiltonian that remains valid \emph{through} a conical intersection, where single-state perturbation theory develops a vanishing denominator and fails. Every gradient and NACME is one reverse-mode transpose of a single contraction graph: the DMRG sweep enters as a gauge-free differentiable node, and all two-electron work is AO-direct through Cholesky factors. The DMRG reference is exact within the active space ($\sim\!10^{-15}$\,Ha). The corrected adiabats close smoothly to a real $S_0/S_1$ conical intersection with a non-vanishing, $1/ΔE$-divergent NACME---where linear-response TDDFT returns zero identically---and the dressing restores the differential dynamic correlation that ionic $ππ^*$ states require. DMRG-NEVPT2 and quasi-degenerate NEVPT2 are each established; what is new is the combined stack---multi-state and through a conical intersection, with analytic gradients and couplings---realized device-resident on commodity hardware.

Reaction dynamics in non-Markovian systems with non-monotonically decaying memory

Whereas the effect of monotonically decaying memory kernels on reaction dynamics has been studied extensively, the effect of oscillatory memory, observed for widely different systems, is much less explored. We analyze non-Markovian barrier-crossing dynamics in the presence of a single exponentially decaying oscillatory friction memory kernel by simulations and analytical theory. We identify three scaling regimes: two in which the mean first-passage time $τ_{\mathrm{MFP}}$ scales quartically and linearly with the memory kernel decay time $τ_{\mathrm{o}}$, respectively, and a third in which $τ_{\mathrm{MFP}}$ scales quartically with the oscillation period $τ_φ$ of the memory kernel. Our results are relevant to a broad class of many-body dynamical systems such as dihedral isomerization processes and chemical reactions in solvents.
