On the stability of holographic confinement with magnetic fluxes

Abstract

We analyze the stability properties of a simple holographic model for a confining field theory. The gravity dual consists of an Abelian gauge field, with non-trivial magnetic flux, coupled to six-dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We construct a one-parameter family of regular solitonic solutions, where the gauge field carries flux along a compact circle that smoothly shrinks. The free energy of these solitonic backgrounds is compared to that of domain-wall solutions. This reveals a zero-temperature first-order phase transition in the dual field theory, separating confining and conformal phases. We compute the spectrum of bound states by analysing field fluctuations in the gravity background, after dimensional reduction on the circle. A tachyonic instability emerges near a turning point in the free energy. The phase transition prevents the realisation of this instability. Near the phase transition and beyond, in metastable and unstable regions, we find evidence that the lightest scalar may be interpreted as an approximate dilaton.

Generalized Unitarity Method for Worldline Field Theory

We present a generalized unitarity method for theories of point-particle worldlines coupled to gravity, analogous to that of scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory. This method allows the computation of perturbative observables from basic principles such as locality and unitarity, thus avoiding gauge redundancies and the use of Feynman diagrams. We illustrate the method with a variety of examples, including the gravitational waveform for the scattering of two point masses at next-to-leading order (or ${\cal O}(G^{5/2})$), reproducing known results. Our method further streamlines the calculation of the scattering dynamics of compact binary systems and opens the door to further applications and systematical exploration of structure in this class of observables.

Interface Minimal Model Holography and Topological String Theory

We study the dynamics of 2d fermions coupled to 3d Chern-Simons gauge fields. For $SU(N)$ gauge group and fermions in the fundamental representation, the resulting interfaces are closely related to $W_N$ minimal models. We give an holographic description of the interfaces within the A-model Topological String Theory. The model has exotic integrability properties, which allow us to propose an exact holographic match of all sphere correlation functions of meson operators. This construction embeds Minimal Model Holography in String Theory.

Chaos of Berry curvature for BPS microstates

We expect black hole microstates to differ in their chaotic properties from states associated with other geometries. For supersymmetric black holes, ordinary level statistics cannot diagnose this distinction, since their energy levels are exactly degenerate. We propose that there is an intrinsic probe of chaos, encoded in the mixing of the microstates under changes in the couplings of the theory, as determined by the non-Abelian Berry curvature of the BPS states under certain deformations. For states dual to horizonless geometries in holographic systems, such as 1/2-BPS states in the D1/D5 CFT and 1/4-BPS states in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, we find that the Berry curvature for marginal deformations is non-random and often exactly zero at generic couplings. By contrast, for states dual to supersymmetric black holes, we show through computations in $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-JT gravity and explicit numerics in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK model that the Berry curvature resembles a random matrix. We also uncover interesting topological features of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK moduli space, as probed by Chern numbers. These results suggest that the Berry curvature sharply distinguishes black hole microstates from smooth horizonless states and provides a robust diagnostic of chaos in supersymmetric sectors.
