Every Poincaré gauge theory is conformal: a compelling case for dynamical vector torsion

Abstract

The Poincaré gauge theory (PGT) of gravity provides a viable formulation of general relativity (Einstein-Cartan theory), and a popular model-building framework for modified gravity with torsion. Notoriously, however, the PGT terms which propagate vector torsion lead to strongly-coupled ghosts: the modern view is that only scalar torsion can propagate. To fix this, we revisit the concept of embedding explicit mass scales in scale-invariant theories, showing how the Klein-Gordon theory naturally leads to a slowly-rolling inflaton. We then show that the unique scale-invariant embedding of PGT leads to two new terms, one of which is the Maxwell term for vector torsion. We provide the full spectrum of quantum particles in the resulting theory. Our result means that every PGT is conformal and - after a two-decade hiatus - vector torsion is back on the menu.

Brane expansions for anti-symmetric line operator index

Based on the D5-brane realization of Wilson line operators in anti-symmetric representations, we propose brane expansion formulas for $I_{N,k}$, the Schur index of ${\cal N}=4$ $U(N)$ SYM decorated by line operators in the anti-symmetric representation of rank $k$. For the large $N$ index $I_{\infty,k}$ we propose a double-sum expansion, and for finite $N$ index $I_{N,k}$ we propose a quadruple-sum expansion. Objects causing finite $k$ and finite $N$ corrections are disk D3-branes ending on the D5-brane.

Holographic free energy and integrated correlators of ${\cal N}=1^*$ theory

We consider the 2nd integrated correlators of ${\cal N}=4$, $D=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, especially those which can be associated with ${\cal N}=1^*$ mass-deformed theories. We provide an analytic derivation of the integrals at supergravity tree level, which has not been available so far. Our result agrees with the previous results from the study of BPS solutions in the dual supergravity models.

Symmetries, anomalies, and dualities of two-dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Models

We analyse the global symmetry structure of two-dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Models with Wess-Zumino term. When the target space has a compact isometry without fixed points, the theory has a pair of (group-like) global symmetries and many such theories also have non-invertible symmetries. We describe how the topology of the target space and Wess-Zumino term determine whether the group-like symmetries are continuous or discrete, and study their pure and mixed 't Hooft anomalies. We also revisit the construction of the non-invertible symmetries, which are associated with possible self-dualities under discrete gauging, and show how the global symmetry structure is left invariant by this gauging.
