Regularization by rough Kraichnan noise for the generalised SQG equations

Abstract

We consider the generalised Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (gSQG) equations in $\mathbb R^2$ with parameter $β\in (0,1)$, an active scalar model interpolating between SQG ($β=1$) and the 2D Euler equations ($β=0$) in vorticity form. Existence of weak $(L^1\cap L^p)$-valued solutions in the deterministic setting is known, but their uniqueness is open. We show that the addition of a rough Stratonovich transport noise of Kraichnan type regularizes the PDE, providing strong existence and pathwise uniqueness of solutions for initial data $θ_0\in L^1\cap L^p$, for suitable values $p\in[2,\infty]$ related to the regularity degree $α$ of the noise and the singularity degree $β$ of the velocity field; in particular, we can cover any $β\in (0,1)$ for suitable $α$ and $p$ and we can reach a suitable ("critical") threshold. The result also holds in the presence of external forcing $f\in L^1_t (L^1\cap L^p)$ and solutions are shown to depend continuously on the data of the problem; furthermore, they are well approximated by vanishing viscosity and regular approximations. With similar techniques, we also show well-posedness for two-dimensional linear transport equation with random drift, with the same noise.

Symmetrization resistance for exponential and geometric distributions

Given a random variable $X$, an independent random variable $Y$ is called a symmetrizer of $X$ if their sum $X+Y$ is symmetric about the origin. The study of symmetrization resistance asks whether every such $Y$ must contain at least as much randomness as $X$. This problem was previously investigated for binary random variables in terms of variance and Shannon entropy. In this paper, we establish sharp symmetrization resistance results for exponential and geometric distributions. We prove that every independent symmetrizer $Y$ of an exponential random variable $X$ has variance, Rényi and Tsallis entropies of every positive order at least as large as that of $X$. Parallel results are obtained for integer-valued independent symmetrizers of geometric random variables. Equality in each comparison holds precisely when $Y$ is an independent copy of $-X$. Furthermore, we show the majorization of $X$ over $Y$ via establishing sharp concentration inequalities for $Y$. The proofs crucially rely on a differential/difference inversion formula for exponential/geometric convolution, which converts the symmetrization constraint into a hazard-rate inequality and enables us to identity exponential/geometric distributions as extremal distributions of a corresponding optimization problem.

An Exchangeable Pair-Hawkes Reference Model and a Cumulant Obstruction for Hard-Sphere Collision Statistics

Collision counts in a dilute gas of hard particles reflect the dependence between successive encounters. We study whether these fluctuations can be represented by a positive linear Hawkes process, in which each event adds a nonnegative contribution to the rate of future events. We construct such a model for particle pairs, require invariance under particle relabeling, and derive its stationary mean and covariance. We prove that, for a stationary positive Hawkes process with finitely many event types and finite expected total family sizes, the long-time growth rate of the third centered moment of any count formed by selecting event types is at least that of its variance. More generally, the long-time growth rates are nondecreasing with cumulant order. These predicted growth rates therefore cannot be matched simultaneously to the ones found in literature in approximations that follow velocity and collision count for a particle in an equilibrium gas. Simulations support the covariance predictions and illustrate the dependence of the physical comparison on the observation window. This restriction motivates models that retain the state left by a collision or allow past events to reduce future rates.

Rough backward stochastic differential equations

We develop an intrinsic well-posedness theory for nonlinear backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) driven simultaneously by Brownian motion and a (level-$2$) rough path of finite $p$-variation. Unlike earlier approaches based on smooth approximation or transformation methods, we formulate the equation directly by viewing its solution as a rough semimartingale (in the sense of \cite{friz2023rough}). This framework is particularly suited to BSDEs, whose Brownian martingale component is only implicitly defined and lacks the \emph{a priori} time regularity required by stochastic-sewing-based controlled rough path methods \cite{fhl21,allan2024rough}. We establish comparison, existence, uniqueness, and stability under the natural regularity condition $H\in C_b^γ$, $γ>p$. The main analytical difficulty, namely, the loss of integrability arising from nonlinear composition, is overcome through conditional $p$-variation norms with BMO-type properties. Finally, by randomizing the rough driver as a Brownian rough path, we establish a direct correspondence between rough BSDEs and backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs).
