Induced quantum magnetism in CEF singlet ground state models: Thermodynamics and excitations

Abstract

We present a comparative investigation of singlet ground state induced magnetism for singlet, doublet and triplet excited CEF states of non-Kramers f-electrons relevant primarily for Pr- and U- based compounds. This type of magnetic order is of intrinsic quantum nature because it requires the superposition of singlet ground state with excited states due to non-diagonal matrix elements of the effective intersite exchange to generate local moments. In contrast to conventional magnets the local moments and their ordering appear simultaneously at the transition temperature. It is finite only if the control parameter proportional to the ratio of exchange strength to level splitting exceeds a critical value marking the quantum critical point of the models. We determine the dependence of transition temperature, saturation moment, renormalised level splitting, specific heat jumps and low-temperature susceptibility as function of control parameter. Furthermore the temperature dependence of these quantities is calculated for control parameters above and below the quantum critical point and the distinction to conventional magnetism is discussed. In addition we investigate the dynamical properties of the three models, deriving the magnetic exciton dispersion and their critical behaviour. In particular the conditions for true and arrested soft-mode behaviour at the ordering wave vector are identified.

Discernible signatures of fractionally charged anyons in a Pfaffian-Laughlin state

Understanding the nature of quasihole excitations, i.e., anyons that have fractional charge and fractional statistics, has been a challenging problem in condensed matter physics. Our theoretical approach to this problem has been to consider a quantum dot containing a few charged particles, Coulomb coupled to the incompressible fluid. The size of the dot and the separation distance of the dot from the incompressible state strongly influences the energetics of the Laughlin quasiholes. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy studies of this system have previously been able to probe these quasiholes that have confirmed our estimates of the Laughlin quasihole energies. Turning to the Pfaffian state, we now observe that such a theoretical approach is also able to provide valuable information about the Pfaffian quasiholes, viz., the energy dispersion, the charge density distribution and the quasihole energy. The energy dispersion of e/4 quasiholes derived here, clearly reflect the interaction between the quantum dot and the incompressible Pfaffian state. PL spectroscopy experiments on the 5/2 Pfaffian-Laughlin state could perhaps shed light on the energetics we found here of these elusive quasiparticles.

Algebras of order parameters in one-dimensional spin systems

We study order parameters in one-dimensional quantum lattice models with finite invertible or non-invertible symmetry. We investigate what properties a string operator must satisfy in order to acquire a non-vanishing expectation value in a given gapped phase. We deduce that multiplets of string order parameters organise into a Lagrangian algebra in the Drinfel'd centre of the symmetry category. In particular, we highlight the role of the multiplication rule as governing the fusion of the twisted sector local operators that constitute the string operator in the infrared limit. Our derivations exploit the tensor network approach to the classification of gapped phases and its reformulation in terms of module categories over the symmetry category. Within this framework, a gapped phase is associated with a pattern of spontaneous symmetry breaking wherein a Morita class of algebras of topological lines is preserved in the ground state subspace. The crux of the proof is to show that the expectation value of any string operator explicitly depends on the tube algebra module associated with the Lagrangian algebra, which is realised as the full centre of the corresponding module category. Finally, we demonstrate that these techniques extend to phases of symmetric mixed states.

Hartree-Fock Density-Matrix Renormalization Group for Very Long Chains

We formulate Hartree--Fock as a density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) sweep of a single Slater determinant, assuming a density--density electron--electron interaction. We compress the occupied state and long-range interaction separately, reducing each sweep step to a small local Fock problem. Exchange is retained throughout. Uniform antiferromagnetic hydrogen chains provide an almost ideal setting for this approach, while retaining the Coulomb interaction and its $1/r$ tail. We initialize and converge a chain of 100,000 electrons in 1.8 million spatial basis functions in about two hours on a 64-GB Mac mini, using less than a third of its memory. The work per sweep is nearly proportional to chain length, and the number of sweeps needed for convergence changes little from 1000 to 100,000 atoms. DMRG's compression of states and environments thus makes large HF calculations with long-range Hartree and exchange practical on an ordinary desktop computer.
