Shifted Contact Structures on Differentiable Stacks

Abstract

We define \emph{$0$-shifted} and \emph{$+1$-shifted contact structures} on differentiable stacks, thus laying the foundations of \emph{shifted Contact Geometry}. As a side result we show that the kernel of a multiplicative $1$-form on a Lie groupoid (might not exist as a Lie groupoid but it) always exists as a differentiable stack, and it is naturally equipped with a stacky version of the curvature of a distribution. Contact structures on orbifolds provide examples of $0$-shifted contact structures, while prequantum bundles over $+1$-shifted symplectic groupoids provide examples of $+1$-shifted contact structures. Our shifted contact structures are related to shifted symplectic structures via a Symplectic-to-Contact Dictionary.

Hard Lefschetz theorem and Hodge-Riemann relations for convex valuations

The algebra of smooth translation-invariant valuations on convex bodies, introduced by S.Alesker in the early 2000s, was in part proved and in part conjectured to satisfy properties formally analogous to those of the cohomology ring of a compact Kähler manifold: Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations. Our main result establishes the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann relations in full generality. As a consequence, we obtain McMullen's quadratic inequalities, which are valid for strongly isomorphic polytopes and known to fail in general, for convex bodies with smooth and strictly positively curved boundary. Our proof is based on elliptic operator theory and on perturbation theory applied to unbounded operators on a natural Hilbert space completion of the space of smooth translation-invariant valuations.

Relative algebroids and Cartan realization problems

We introduce the notion of a relative algebroid to address existence and classification problems for geometric structures governed by partial differential equations. This framework unifies the theories of ordinary Lie algebroids and (formal) partial differential equations. We study prolongation and formal integrability of a relative algebroid, leading to a profinite Lie algebroid that governs the classification problem. At the core of this new framework is the notion of a relative derivation, whose theory we develop in detail. Throughout, we illustrate the theory with numerous examples.

Connections, metrics and Higgs fields on complex fiber bundles

We give a differential-geometric representation of the extension class associated to a holomorphic fibration, generalizing the work of Atiyah on holomorphic principal bundles in a natural way. As an application, we obtain a nonlinear analogue of the classical result of Weil on characterizing the existence of flat connections on holomorphic vector bundles over compact Riemann surfaces. We further establish a faithful functor from the category of nonlinear flat holomorphic bundles reductive of Kähler type to the category of nonlinear Higgs bundles over the same connected compact Kähler base. Finally, we establish a notion of nonlinear harmonic bundle and prove that the variation of nonabelian Hodge structure is a nonlinear harmonic bundle in the rank one case and in the semisimple case.
