Particle zoo in a doped spin chain: Correlated states of mesons and magnons

Abstract

It is a widely accepted view that the interplay of spin- and charge-degrees of freedom in doped antiferromagnets (AFMs) gives rise to the rich physics of high-temperature superconductors. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how effective low-energy degrees of freedom and the corresponding field theories emerge from microscopic models, including the $t-J$ and Hubbard Hamiltonians. A promising view comprises that the charge carriers have a rich internal parton structure on intermediate scales, but the interplay of the emergent partons with collective magnon excitations of the surrounding AFM remains unexplored. Here we study a doped one-dimensional spin chain in a staggered magnetic field and demonstrate that it supports a zoo of various long-lived excitations. These include magnons; mesonic pairs of spinons and chargons, along with their ro-vibrational excitations; and tetra-parton bound states of mesons and magnons. We identify these types of quasiparticles in various spectra using DMRG simulations. Moreover, we introduce a strong-coupling theory describing the polaronic dressing and molecular binding of mesons to collective magnon excitations. The effective theory can be solved by standard tools developed for polaronic problems, and can be extended to study similar physics in two-dimensional doped AFMs in the future. Experimentally, the doped spin-chain in a staggered field can be directly realized in quantum gas microscopes.

Generalized $η$-pairing approach to interacting non-Hermitian systems in arbitrary dimensions

Developing a general and rigorous analytical approach to non-Hermitian many-body systems is a challenging task. Here, we generalize the eta-pairing theory to very general non-Hermitian Hubbard models and find many novel phenomena without Hermitian analogs. For instance, the Hermitian conjugate of an eta-pairing eigenoperator may not be an eigenoperator, eta-pairing eigenoperators can be spatially modulated, and the $SU(2)$ pseudospin symmetry may not be possible even if $H$ commutes with the eta-pairing operators. Remarkably, these novel non-Hermitian phenomena are closely related to each other by several theorems we establish and can lead to, for example, new types of eta-pairing operators (e.g., the notion of non-Hermitian angular-momentum operators) and the Fock space localization of many-body eta-pairing eigenstates. Some issues on the $SO(4)$ and particle-hole symmetries are clarified. Our general eta-pairing theory also reveals a previously unnoticed unification of these symmetries of the Hubbard model. These general results can be illustrated with concrete examples such as the generalized Hatano-Nelson-Hubbard models and a general two-sublattice model. In particular, the general two-sublattice model can reveal the eta-pairing structure [e.g., the $SO(4)$ symmetry] in systems with Hermitian hoppings, including the original eta-pairing theory for square lattice, the extension to triangular lattice, and some topological systems. Our results establish a new and rigorous theoretical framework for studying interacting non-Hermitian systems in arbitrary spatial dimensions, even without bulk translation symmetry.

Dynamics and stability of U(1) spin liquids beyond mean-field theory: Triangular-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are long-range entangled phases of frustrated magnets exhibiting fractionalised spin excitations. In two dimensions, there is limited analytical understanding of their excitation spectra beyond parton mean-field theories, which fail to capture many features of the finite frequency dynamical response. We use a self-consistent mean-field theory combined with the random phase approximation (RPA) for the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice to describe the strong spinon-spinon interactions of the U(1) Dirac QSL. We obtain quantitative results for the dynamical spin structure factor and phase diagram compatible with comprehensive numerical efforts. We show the continuum response at the Brillouin zone corners is described by a spinon-exciton hybridised with monopole gauge excitations. We further show that the transition from the QSL to 120-degree coplanar order is in the QED$_3$ O(3)-GN universality class. We extend the method to chiral QSLs and XXZ anisotropy, and discuss its broad range of applicability to other models and for describing inelastic neutron scattering experiments in KYbSe$_2$.

Fermi Liquid Fixed Point Deformations due to Codimension Two Defects

We show that codimension-two defects in Fermi liquids deform the renormalization group flow via a marginally relevant coupling. The mechanism for generating the flow is distinct from the case of the Kondo problem (codimension-three defects) in that the effective particle-hole asymmetry that leads to the log running is due to the spatial anisotropy generated by the defect. The mechanism for the log generation has a simple geometric explanation which shows that hole fluctuations are suppressed as the incoming momentum is taken to be along the direction of the defect. The RG flow time is shown to scale with the length of the defect. We also show that the dislon, the Goldstone mode localized to the defect, couples in a non-derivative fashion to the bulk fermions and becomes relevant above the dislons' Debye frequency which depends upon the defect tension.
