UV graviton scattering and positivity bounds from IR dispersion relations

Abstract

Scattering amplitudes mediated by graviton exchange display IR singularities in the forward limit. This obstructs standard application of positivity bounds based on twice subtracted dispersion relations. Such divergences can be cancelled only if the UV limit of the scattering amplitude behaves in a specific way, which implies a very non-trivial connection between the UV and IR behaviors of the amplitude. We show that this relation can be expressed in terms of an integral transform, obtaining analytic results when $t \log{s}\rightarrow 0$. Carefully applying this limit to dispersion relations, we find that infinite arc integrals, which are usually taken to vanish, can give a non-trivial contribution in the presence of gravity, unlike in the case of finite negative $t$. This implies that gravitational positivity bounds cannot be trusted unless the size of this contribution is estimated in some way, which implies assumptions on the UV completion of gravitational interactions. We discuss the relevance of these findings in the particular case of QED coupled to gravity.

Equivariant localization for wrapped M5-branes and D4-branes

Following the work of [1], we consider six- and seven-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to a vector multiplet on an ansatz of $AdS_{4,5}\times{M}_2$, respectively, where $M_2$ is a two-dimensional surface with a Killing vector. We construct equivariantly closed forms from spinor bilinears of Killing spinors. From the integration of equivariantly closed forms via the Berline-Vergne-Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula, we derive the gravitational blocks which were previously conjectured. For the construction of equivariantly closed forms, we formulate six- and seven-dimensional gauged supergravity in the very special geometry.

Higher-spins on Taub-NUT and higher-spin Taub-NUT

We consider higher-spin extensions of self-dual Yang-Mills (HS-SDYM) and self-dual Gravity (HS-SDGR), which are also truncations of chiral higher-spin gravity. Higher-spin fields can consistently propagate on gravitational instantons and we construct solutions to the higher-spin equations on the Taub-NUT background. We show that these solutions remain exact solutions of HS-SDYM. For HS-SDGR the perturbation theory converges for any given spin to give a higher-spin generalization of Taub-NUT and we identify a commutative non-associative algebra that governs the structure of the perturbation theory.

Dynamical tidal response of regular black holes: Perturbative analysis and shell EFT interpretation

We compute the frequency-dependent quadrupolar tidal response of Bardeen, Hayward, and Fan-Wang regular black holes in the polar and axial sectors by solving the coupled gravitational-electromagnetic perturbation equations numerically. Our analysis independently recovers the static Love numbers and their scaling at small regularization, while differences can occur at finite regularization due to higher-order corrections. The ratios of metric source-response coefficients at low frequencies ($ω$) have smooth corrections starting at $\mathcal{O}(ω^{2})$. Furthermore, we compare the peaks in the response coefficients with the real parts of the quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies and find that in the polar sector for Bardeen, Hayward and Fan-Wang, peaks for small values of the regularization parameter, align with the corresponding QNM frequencies within the damping width provided by the imaginary part of the respective QNM. On the other hand, in the axial sector, the Bardeen and Hayward maxima of the response coefficients are not aligned with the real part of the QNM, whereas all the Fan-Wang peaks are. Moreover, we perform a shell EFT calculation using a scalar field as a simpler probe. The shell EFT construction expresses the response in terms of renormalised Wilson coefficients and helps isolate the scheme-dependent finite terms from the scheme-independent part. We also show that it yields the same source-response ratio as the direct calculation when the source is subtracted in the same background. This agreement, obtained in the simpler probe case, further supports the broader interpretation of the dynamical tidal response as a well-defined gauge-invariant observable.
