Orbital disorder and ordering in NaTiSi2O6: 29Si and 23Na NMR Study

Abstract

NaTiSi2O6 is an exemplary compound, showing an orbital assisted spin-Peierls phase transition at Tc = 210 K. We present the results of 29Si and 23Na NMR measurements of NaTiSi2O6. The use of magic angle spinning techniques unambiguously shows that only one dynamically averaged silicon site can be seen at T > Tc. At cooling, the 29Si MAS NMR spectrum shows interesting changes. Immediately below Tc the spectrum gets very broad. Cooling further, it shows two broad lines of unequal intensities which become narrower as the temperature decreases. Below 70 K two narrow lines have chemical shifts that are typical for diamagnetic silicates. The hyperfine field values for the two sites are 7.4 kOe/kB and 4.9 kOe/kB. In the paramagnetic state at high temperature, the spin-lattice relaxation of 29Si was found to be weakly temperature dependent. Below Tc the Arrhenius type temperature dependence of the relaxation rate indicates an energy gap D/kB = 1000(50) K. In the temperature region from 120 to 300 K the relaxation rate was strongly frequency dependent. At room temperature we found a power law dependence on Larmor frequency of -0.65(5). For 70 < T < 120 K the relaxation appeared to be non-exponential which we assigned to a relaxation due to fixed paramagnetic centers. Simulation of the magnetization recovery curve showed a temperature dependence of the concentration of these centers proportional to the magnetic susceptibility. The NMR spectrum of 23Na shows the line with typical shape for the central transition of a quadrupolar nucleus. A small frequency shift of 23Na resonance corresponds to a very small hyperfine field of 0.32 kOe/kB . In addition, at T > Tc the 23Na spectrum shows another Lorentzian shaped resonance which we attribute to the Na sites where the quadrupolar coupling is partly averaged out by ionic motion.

Symmetry-resolved topology from interacting Green's functions

Topological phases in narrow-gap materials often arise from a delicate interplay of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electron correlation, making their prediction sensitive to the underlying electronic-structure approximation. Electronic topology is commonly characterized using effective one-body Hamiltonians, but this approach becomes delicate near gap closings and does not reveal how a band inversion is realized in the interacting spectrum. Here we introduce a multi-messenger analysis that combines three complementary readouts of a single interacting Green's function: the Fu-Kane invariant of the topological Hamiltonian, the symmetry-resolved spectral function, and the symmetry-resolved orbital occupation. Together, they identify the topological class, resolve band connectivity, and track the orbital character of the inversion. We implement this framework within fully self-consistent relativistic GW, treating SOC and electronic correlation on equal footing while eliminating dependence on a density-functional starting point. Applied to strain-tunable $α$-Sn, the approach distinguishes its competing zero-gap, Dirac-semimetal, and topological-insulator regimes and provides an internally consistent description of their common band-inversion mechanism. More broadly, this framework offers a frequency-resolved route to diagnosing correlated topology across both gapped and near-critical states.

Spectroscopic signatures of Kohn anomaly in a topological crystalline insulator

Topological crystalline insulators extend the concept of topological insulators by hosting surface states protected by crystallographic symmetry. Their topological phase transitions arise from spin-orbit-driven band inversion in the bulk electronic structure, reshaping the low-energy electronic environment and its coupling to lattice excitations. While the electronic aspects of band topology are well established, the corresponding dynamics of lattice and electron-phonon interactions remain largely unexplored. Here, we report a pronounced softening of a low-energy surface phonon mode across the topological phase transition in Pb$_{0.77}$Sn$_{0.23}$Se, revealed by temperature-dependent time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. Unlike the well-known phonon softening in ferroelectrics, this effect does not signal a structural instability but instead reflects electronic reconstruction. We attribute the softening to the spectroscopic manifestations of a Kohn anomaly, indicating a strong coupling between lattice vibrations and Dirac-like surface electrons in the topological phase. Consistently, the phonon linewidth deviates from the standard anharmonic temperature dependence, further evidencing enhanced electron-phonon coupling. The observed changes in phonon frequency and linewidth at around 120 K are consistent with the reported topological phase transition temperature in this material. Our results thus provide a spectroscopic route for the distinct identification of the onset of a topological phase.

Weak Ferromagnetism in NiS$_2$ under Nanocrystallization

Structurally well-ordered NiS$_2$ nanocrystals with an average diameter of $27.0 \pm 6.5$ nm retain the bulk-like two-step antiferromagnetic transitions, as shown by magnetization and heat-capacity measurements. Below the lower transition, the nanocrystals exhibit a hysteretic ferromagnetic response with large coercivity, exchange bias, and a vertical loop shift after field cooling, whereas the $M$-$H$ response just above the transition is nearly linear. These features are best explained by uncompensated surface moments generated where the low-temperature antiferromagnetic order terminates at the nanocrystal surface. The absence of a clear additional bulk-like weak-ferromagnetic component constrains homogeneous-canting models and indirectly favors a domain-wall scenario for the weak ferromagnetism of bulk NiS$_2$.
