Probing details of spin--orbit coupling through Pauli spin blockade

Abstract

Spin--orbit interaction (SOI) plays a fundamental role in many low-dimensional semiconductor and hybrid quantum devices. In the rapidly evolving field of semiconductor spin qubits, SOI is an essential ingredient that can allow for ultrafast qubit control. The exact manifestation of SOI in a given device is, however, often both hard to predict theoretically and probe experimentally. Here, we develop a detailed theoretical connection between the leakage current through a double quantum dot in Pauli spin blockade and the underlying SOI in the system. We present a general analytic expression for the leakage current, which allows to connect experimentally observable features to both the magnitude and orientation of the effective spin--orbit field acting on the moving carriers. Motivated by the large recent interest in hole-based quantum devices, we further zoom in on the case of Pauli blockade of hole spins, assuming a strong transverse confinement potential. In this limit we also find an analytic expression for the current at low external magnetic field, that includes the effect of hyperfine coupling of the hole spins to randomly fluctuating nuclear spin baths. This result can be used to extract detailed information about both hyperfine and spin--orbit coupling parameters for hole spins in devices with a significant fraction of non-zero nuclear spins.

Quantum Geometric Injection and Shift Optical Forces Drive Coherent Phonons

We develop a gauge-invariant quantum-geometric theory of light-induced Raman forces driving coherent lattice dynamics in solids. We show that the resonant interband response separates into injection and shift forces, providing the lattice analogue of injection and shift photocurrents. Crucially, the electronic quantum metric and Berry curvature directly govern these forces, weighted by distinct electron--phonon quantities. The injection force is controlled by the quantum geometric tensor and differences between band-diagonal electron--phonon couplings, producing the resonant displacive response. The shift force is a resonant impulsive response governed by quantum geometry and a phononic shift vector arising from interband electron--phonon coherence. We derive polarization selection rules, symmetry constraints, and temporal signatures. Applied to interlayer shear phonons in a bilayer Haldane model, the theory predicts tunability with optical frequency, topology, electronic temperature, and current-induced symmetry breaking. These results establish a quantum-geometric framework for coherent lattice dynamics and identify coherent phonons as experimentally accessible signatures of electronic quantum geometry in quantum materials.

Magneto-oscillations, nonlinearity, and nonreciprocity of Coulomb drag in quantum circuits

We consider the problem of Coulomb drag in interactively coupled quantum circuits built of adiabatic constrictions: quantum point contacts and short quantum-wire channels. The interplay of spatial confinement and magnetic field leads to a rich oscillatory response of the drag current as a function of gate voltage and magnetic field: drag peaks track the depopulation of magnetoelectric subbands, are asymptotically periodic in inverse field, and their visibility is controlled by the competition of temperature with the field-sharpened tunneling width of the constriction. We derive a closed expression for the linear drag conductance whose interaction kernel simplifies dramatically in the experimentally relevant limit of a long thermal length compared with the range of the interwire coupling, investigate the drag in the nonlinear regime, where the drag current measures the transconductance of the drive channel at any field, and discuss physically motivated models of dissipation-induced nonreciprocity of the drag signal. Extensions accounting for Zeeman splitting, interaction renormalization of the barrier transmission, backscattering at high field, and the frequency structure of the circuit coupling delineate how each mechanism imprints itself on the temperature dependence and lineshapes of the drag oscillations.

Non-Adiabatic Spin-Induced Currents in Magnetic Weyl Semimetals

We theoretically study dc electric currents induced by rapid spin precession in noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetals using the Floquet--Keldysh Green's-function formalism. The spin dynamics act as a time-dependent chiral gauge field and the geometric structure of electric currents is expressed in terms of the Berry curvature, the quantum metric, and the shift vector. For an isotropic Weyl cone, only an injection current is generated. This current scales quadratically with the driving frequency and linearly with the relaxation time associated with coupling to a fermionic bath. We further show that a finite Weyl-cone tilt modifies the available interband-transition phase space, smooths the frequency dependence of the current, and allows for a shift current and another type of injection current, both of which flow in directions determined by the tilt and the direction of the precession. A finite net current can remain after summing contributions from Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities when their transition phase spaces are inequivalent.
