Measurement of the 235U(n,f) cross section relative to the 6Li(n,t) and 10B(n,alpha) standards from thermal to 170 keV neutron energy range at n_TOF

Abstract

The 235U(n,f) cross section was measured in a wide energy range at n_TOF relative to 6Li(n,t) and 10B(n,alpha), with high resolution and in a wide energy range, with a setup based on a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. This allowed us to make a direct comparison of the reaction yields under the same experimental conditions, and taking into account the forward/backward emission asymmetry. A hint of an anomaly in the 10÷30 keV neutron energy range had been previously observed in other experiments, indicating a cross section systematically lower by several percent relative to major evaluations. The present results indicate that the evaluated cross section in the 9÷18 keV neutron energy range is indeed overestimated, both in the recent updates of ENDF/B-VIII.0 and of the IAEA reference data. Furthermore, these new high-resolution data confirm the existence of resonance-like structures in the keV neutron energy region. The new, high accuracy results here reported may lead to a reduction of the uncertainty in the 1÷100 keV neutron energy region. Finally, the present data provide additional confidence on the recently re-evaluated cross section integral between 7.8 and 11 eV.

First Measurement of Near-Threshold J/ψ Photoproduction on the Neutron

We report the first measurement of the total and t-differential cross sections for near-threshold J/$ψ$ photoproduction on the neutron, obtained with the CLAS12 detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The measurements, performed using a liquid-deuterium target, also provide the incoherent total and t-differential cross sections on the bound proton, enabling the first direct comparison of near-threshold J/$ψ$ photoproduction on bound protons and neutrons. Interpreted within Vector Meson Dominance, holographic QCD, and GPD-based frameworks, the data allow for the investigation of the gluonic structure of bound nucleons. A comparison with free proton results reveals hints of modifications to the gluon structure of nucleons in the nuclear medium, within the assumptions of the extraction and on the underlying production mechanism. The comparison of bound neutron and bound proton cross sections provides new constraints on the near-threshold J/$ψ$ production mechanism, which is crucial in order to establish J/$ψ$ photoproduction as a probe of the nucleon's gluonic structure.

Modernization in processing and dissemination of experimental cross section data in EXFOR

The EXFOR library is a nearly complete database for experimental radionuclide production cross sections for light charged-particle induced reactions, and retrieval of the experimental cross sections in EXFOR is the first step in determination of the best estimate of the radionuclide production cross section. The EXFOR format was designed with 80-column punched cards as the recording media, but the format is still preferred for compilation and exchange of the nuclear reaction data. The format is suitable for reading and processing by EXFOR compilers, but it is not a good choice for reading by EXFOR users with modern computer languages such as Python. We have recently attempted to lower the barrier for modern software engineers to access the information stored in the EXFOR by developing tools converting an EXFOR file to (1) the HTML format for human reading (X4IVEW), and (2) the CX4 (Compact EXFOR) format for tabulation and plotting (X4TOCX). This article introduces X4VIEW and a preliminary version of X4TOCX with the radionuclide production cross section as an example.

Photon-induced $J/ψ$ as a linearly polarized probe of collision geometry in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the linear polarization of quasi-real photons can correlate the spin orientation of photon-induced vector mesons with the collision geometry. To explore this sensitivity, we present the first measurement of the decay angular distribution of photon-induced $J/ψ$ with respect to the event plane in heavy-ion collisions with hadronic overlap. The analysis uses Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at a nucleon--nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=200$ GeV recorded by STAR. After correcting for the finite event-plane resolution and subtracting the residual hadronic contribution, we extract a negative second-order modulation, $A_2^{\rm phot} = -0.39 \pm 0.11~(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.04~(\mathrm{sys.})$, for $|y^{ee}|<0.8$, $p_{\mathrm T}^{ee}<0.2~\mathrm{GeV}/c$, and 30--80% centrality. This modulation provides evidence that the $J/ψ$ polarization is correlated with the event plane, as expected for linearly polarized photons. The observed modulation establishes polarized $J/ψ$ photoproduction as a direct probe of the transverse orientation of the initial collision geometry.
