On the connection between hydrodynamics and quantum chaos in holographic theories with stringy corrections

Abstract

Pole-skipping is a recently discovered signature of many-body quantum chaos in collective energy dynamics. It establishes a precise connection between resummed, all-order hydrodynamics and the underlying microscopic chaos. In this paper, we demonstrate the existence of pole-skipping in holographic conformal field theories with higher-derivative gravity duals. In particular, we first consider Einstein-Hilbert gravity deformed by curvature-squared ($R^2$) corrections and then type IIB supergravity theory with the $α'^3 R^4$ term, where $α'$ is set by the length of the fundamental string. The former case allows us to discuss the effects of leading-order $1/N_c$ corrections (with $N_c$ being the number of colours of the dual gauge group) and phenomenological coupling constant dependence. In Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, pole-skipping turns out to be valid non-perturbatively in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. The $α'^3 R^4$ deformation enables us to study perturbative inverse 't Hooft coupling corrections ($α'^3 \sim 1 / λ^{3/2}$) in $SU(N_c)$, $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with infinite $N_c$. While the maximal Lyapunov exponent characterising quantum chaos remains uncorrected, the butterfly velocity is shown to depend both on $N_c$ and the coupling. Several implications of the relation between hydrodynamics and chaos are discussed, including an intriguing similarity between the dependence of the butterfly velocity and the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density on stringy corrections.

Brane expansions for anti-symmetric line operator index

Based on the D5-brane realization of Wilson line operators in anti-symmetric representations, we propose brane expansion formulas for $I_{N,k}$, the Schur index of ${\cal N}=4$ $U(N)$ SYM decorated by line operators in the anti-symmetric representation of rank $k$. For the large $N$ index $I_{\infty,k}$ we propose a double-sum expansion, and for finite $N$ index $I_{N,k}$ we propose a quadruple-sum expansion. Objects causing finite $k$ and finite $N$ corrections are disk D3-branes ending on the D5-brane.

Holographic free energy and integrated correlators of ${\cal N}=1^*$ theory

We consider the 2nd integrated correlators of ${\cal N}=4$, $D=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, especially those which can be associated with ${\cal N}=1^*$ mass-deformed theories. We provide an analytic derivation of the integrals at supergravity tree level, which has not been available so far. Our result agrees with the previous results from the study of BPS solutions in the dual supergravity models.

Symmetries, anomalies, and dualities of two-dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Models

We analyse the global symmetry structure of two-dimensional Non-Linear Sigma Models with Wess-Zumino term. When the target space has a compact isometry without fixed points, the theory has a pair of (group-like) global symmetries and many such theories also have non-invertible symmetries. We describe how the topology of the target space and Wess-Zumino term determine whether the group-like symmetries are continuous or discrete, and study their pure and mixed 't Hooft anomalies. We also revisit the construction of the non-invertible symmetries, which are associated with possible self-dualities under discrete gauging, and show how the global symmetry structure is left invariant by this gauging.
