Emergent pseudospin-1 Maxwell fermions with a threefold degeneracy in optical lattices

Abstract

The discovery of relativistic spin-1/2 fermions such as Dirac and Weyl fermions in condensed-matter or artificial systems opens a new era in modern physics. An interesting but rarely explored question is whether other relativistic spinal excitations could be realized with artificial systems. Here, we construct twoand three-dimensional tight-binding models realizable with cold fermionic atoms in optical lattices, where the low energy excitations are effectively described by the spin-1 Maxwell equations in the Hamiltonian form. These relativistic (linear dispersion) excitations with unconventional integer pseudospin, beyond the Dirac-Weyl-Majorana fermions, are an exotic kind of fermions named asMaxwell fermions. We demonstrate that the systems have rich topological features. For instance, the threefold degenerate points called Maxwell points may have quantized Berry phases and anomalous quantum Hall effects with spin-momentum locking may appear in topological Maxwell insulators in the two-dimensional lattices. In three dimensions,Maxwell points may have nontrivial monopole charges of \pm2 with two Fermi arcs connecting them, and the merging of the Maxwell points leads to topological phase transitions. Finally, we propose realistic schemes for realizing the model Hamiltonians and detecting the topological properties of the emergent Maxwell quasiparticles in optical lattices.

Mean-field phase diagrams of spinor bosons in an optical cavity

The plethora of possible ground states of spinor bosons placed in an external lattice and a cavity is revisited. We discuss the simplest configuration when the external lattice nodes coincide with the antinodes of the cavity field. We analyze the problem within the grand-canonical mean-field approach, considering both the homogeneous system and the nonhomogeneous case with a harmonic trapping potential. Due to the spin degree of freedom, in the homogeneous case, we treat the system in a twofold manner: we impose the physically relevant total-magnetization constraint, while also discussing the minimization landscape for the full unconstrained problem. In the latter, by combining analytical arguments with numerical calculations based on the Gutzwiller ansatz, we show that the system exhibits two types of magnetic phases: an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator (AFM) and a ferromagnetic density wave (FDW). In addition, two distinct supersolid phases emerge, characterized by different patterns of spin and density imbalances. In the case of zero total magnetization, the FDW phases are replaced by charge density waves (CDWs) that lack net magnetic ordering. Finally, we establish the phase diagram of the trapped system, providing direct guidance for future experiments.

Interaction-rotation driven localization-delocalization crossover in Fock space: An exact diagonalization study on trapped Bose gas

We study the localization-delocalization crossover and quantum entanglement with varying numbers of interacting bosons for the nonrotating and the rotating cases. The many-body ground state within subspaces of given total angular momentum is obtained via exact diagonalization and analyzed using the inverse participation ratio (IPR), the information (Shannon) entropy and the von Neumann entanglement entropy. In the non-rotating case, a crossover from localization to delocalization is observed with increasing interaction, characterized by decreasing value of IPR with corresponding increase in information entropy and von Neumann entanglement entropy, arising from interaction-induced depletion of Bose-Einstein condensate. When subjected to rotation, the system is driven further towards delocalization due to rotation-induced depletion of Bose-Einstein condensate. The crossover from localization to delocalization is indicated by distribution of the eigenstate weights over an increasing number of basis states in the many-body Hilbert space. The consistent behavior of IPR, information entropy and von Neumann entanglement entropy with respect to interaction and rotation demonstrates that these quantities provide a unified characterization of the localization-delocalization crossover. Results on computed von Neumann entropy show that localized states exhibit weak entanglement while delocalized states are characterized by strong entanglement within the quantum many-body system.

Few-body bound states in the anyon-Hubbard model

Quantum statistics in low-dimensional systems predicts anyonic particles with fractional exchange statistics which are neither that of bosons nor fermions. While anyons are typically found in two dimensions as excitations of topologically-ordered states of matter, anyon-like exchange statistics has also been discussed in one dimension, for instance, in the context of the anyon-Hubbard model (AHM), the physics of which has recently been observed in experiment [Kwan et al., arXiv:2306.01737; Dhar et al., arXiv:2412.21131; and Bakkali-Hassani et al., arXiv:2602.20421]. The AHM can be formulated in terms of bosons featuring density-dependent Peierls phases, described by a statistical phase angle $θ$, which controls asymmetric transport and the formation of dynamically bound pairs at finite momentum. Here, we show theoretically that the AHM also hosts exact two-body bound states in the continuum (BICs) for arbitrary $θ\neq 0$, and genuine three- and four-body bound states. Unlike conventional bound states stabilized by attractive (or repulsive) interactions, which are energetically localized with a large effective mass, these clusters here are bound by a purely kinematic mechanism endowing them with fast chiral transport properties. We provide a simple variational approximation to the three-body bound states and explain their binding mechanism. Moreover, we show that the signatures of three-body bound states in the AHM can be directly probed experimentally from the expansion dynamics starting from three localized particles.
