Flat bands in fractal-like geometry

Abstract

We report the presence of multiple flat bands in a class of two-dimensional (2D) lattices formed by Sierpinski gasket (SPG) fractal geometries as the basic unit cells. Solving the tight-binding Hamiltonian for such lattices with different generations of a SPG network, we find multiple degenerate and non-degenerate completely flat bands, depending on the configuration of parameters of the Hamiltonian. Moreover, we find a generic formula to determine the number of such bands as a function of the generation index $\ell$ of the fractal geometry. We show that the flat bands and their neighboring dispersive bands have remarkable features, the most interesting one being the spin-1 conical-type spectrum at the band center without any staggered magnetic flux, in contrast to the Kagome lattice. We furthermore investigate the effect of the magnetic flux in these lattice settings and show that different combinations of fluxes through such fractal unit cells lead to richer spectrum with a single isolated flat band or gapless electron- or hole-like flat bands. Finally, we discuss a possible experimental setup to engineer such fractal flat band network using single-mode laser-induced photonic waveguides.

The infinite volume limit of the Hopfield neural networks in the replica-symmetric regime

Despite extensive research over the past five decades, a rigorous determination of the infinite-volume limit of the free energy of the Hopfield model with an extensive number of patterns has remained an outstanding open problem as standard methods from spin-glass theory have so far proven inadequate for this purpose. While a complete proof for finite, non-vanishing, loads is still out of reach, here we develop a novel interpolation strategy that allows us to express the free energy of the Hopfield model in terms of a linear combination of the free energies of hard- and soft-spin glass models along with a remainder contribution. The payoff of this interpolation scheme is twofold: (i) As the remainder involves positive-definite fluctuations of the order parameters (and it vanishes under a concentration assumption on their means where we consistently recover the replica-symmetric picture) such an expression finally constitutes a rigorous {\em bound} on the exact free energy, rather than just an {\em approximation,} as it was the case for earlier interpolation procedures à la Guerra. \newline (ii) As for the spin-glass models the existence of the infinite-volume free energy has been previously determined by the Guerra--Toninelli scheme, this novel interpolation allows us to extend its validity to the Hopfield model too. Yet, as the equivalence between the Hopfield model and mixtures of spin-glasses is currently well established under replica symmetry and up to the first step of replica symmetry breaking, at present our approach can be rigorously implemented only within these regimes. \newline In this work, by inspecting how the order parameters have to self-average around their means, we restrict our attention to the replica-symmetric regime.

Geometric flow of planar domain-wall loops

We investigate the geometric evolution of elastic domain-wall loops in two dimensions. Assuming an instantaneous, isotropic, and homogeneous arc-velocity response of the domain wall to external pressure and local signed curvature, we derive closed dynamical equations linking the enclosed area and loop perimeter for both linear and nonlinear arc-velocity response functions. This reduced description enables predictions for the dynamics of both spontaneous and externally driven domains-subjected to constant or alternating fields-within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau scalar $ϕ^4$ model. In the linear response regime, where a non-crossing principle holds in the absence of external driving, we obtain exact results. In particular, we demonstrate that the relaxation rate of the total spontaneous magnetization becomes quantized for arbitrary initial conditions involving multiple, possibly nested, loops, with discrete jumps corresponding to individual loop collapse events. Under external driving, the avoidance principle breaks down due to sparse interactions between interfaces-either within a single loop or between multiple loops-leading to coalescence or splitting events that change the number of loops. A quantized geometrical observable involving the total area and perimeter is identified in this case as well, exhibiting discrete jumps both at interface interaction events and at individual loop collapses. We further use approximate area-perimeter relations to estimate the spontaneous collapse lifetimes of compact magnetic domains, as well as their dynamics under alternating-field-assisted collapse in disordered ultrathin magnetic films. Our predictions are compared with experimental observations in such systems.

Observation of a Topological Phase Transition in Random Coaxial Cable Structures with Chiral Symmetry

We report an experimental study of the disordered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, implemented in a system of coaxial cables, whose radio frequency properties map on to the SSH Hamiltonian. By measuring multiple chains with random hopping terms, we demonstrate the presence of a topologically protected state, with frequency variation of less than 0.2% over the ensemble. Connecting the ends of the chains to form loops, we observe a topological phase transition, characterised by the closure of the band gap and the appearance of states which are delocalised, despite the strong disorder.
