Band filling dependence of the Curie temperature in CrO2

Abstract

Rutile CrO$_2$ is an important half-metallic ferromagnetic material, which is also widely used in magnetic recording. In an attempt to find the conditions, which lead to the increase the Curie temperature ($T_{\rm C}$), we study theoretically the band-filling dependence of interatomic exchange interactions in the rutile compounds. For these purposes, we use the effective low-energy model for the magnetic $t_{2g}$ bands, derived from the first-principles electronic structure calculations in the Wannier basis, which is solved by means of dynamical mean-field theory. After the solution, we calculate the interatomic exchange interactions, by using the theory of infinitesimal spin rotations, and evaluate $T_{\rm C}$. We argue that, as far as the Curie temperature is concerned, the band filling realized in CrO$_2$ is far from being the optimal one and much higher $T_{\rm C}$ can be obtained by decreasing the number of $t_{2g}$ electrons ($n$) via the hole doping. We find that the optimal $n$ is close to $1$, which should correspond to the case of VO$_2$, provided that it is crystallized in the rutile structure. This finding was confirmed by using the experimental rutile structure for both CrO$_2$ and VO$_2$ and reflects the general tendency towards ferromagnetism for the narrow-band compounds at the beginning of the band filling. In particular, our results suggest that the strong ferromagnetism can be achieved in the thin films of VO$_2$, whose crystal structure is controlled by the substrate.

Fermionic Anomalies of Finite Symmetries on Lattices

We develop a lattice characterization of fermionic 't Hooft anomalies of finite internal symmetries in one and two spatial dimensions, formulated in terms of obstructions to symmetric short-range-entangled (SRE) states. We consider lattice systems formed by tensor product of onsite fermionic and bosonic local degrees of freedom, and finite internal symmetry given by a central extension $\mathbb Z_2^F\to G_f\to G_b$. We extract a hierarchy of fermionic anomaly indices for a given symmetry operator in both (1+1)D and (2+1)D. In (1+1)D, an exact lattice symmetry is characterized by a pair of cohomological data $(n_2,ν_3)$. For $G_f=G_b\times\mathbb Z_2^F$, we further show that a symmetry with trivial lattice anomaly indices $(n_2,ν_3)$ is onsiteable and hence admits a symmetric SRE state, establishing that these indices faithfully detect the lattice anomaly. Comparing with continuum fermionic QFT, we find that exact lattice symmetries do not realize the additional $H^1(BG_b,\mathbb Z_2)$ anomaly layer in continuum QFT. In particular, for $G_b=\mathbb Z_2$, exact lattice symmetries realize only the even $\mathbb Z_4$ subgroup of the continuum $\mathbb Z_8$ classification. In (2+1)D, we identify three successive anomaly layers of cohomological data $(n_2,n_3,ν_4)$. We show that a nontrivial value of any layer obstructs a symmetric SRE state. For $G_f=G_b\times\mathbb Z_2^F$, it also forbids a symmetric invertible state. We also construct a non-onsite $\mathbb Z_4^F$ lattice symmetry in (2+1)D with nontrivial lattice anomaly index that forbids any symmetric invertible states with $c_-\in\mathbb{Z}$, therefore forbids any invertible states compatible with onsite $\mathbb{Z}_4^F$ symmetry. Our results motivate a systematic study of which continuum anomalies admit exact microscopic lattice realizations.

Symmetry-permuting entanglers for non-invertible symmetry-protected topological phases

1+1D symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with invertible symmetry can be characterized by the symmetric entanglers: globally symmetric finite-depth local unitary circuits that generate representative ground states from a product state. For non-invertible symmetries, however, distinct SPT phases, such as the three $\mathrm{Rep}(D_8)$ SPT phases, may not be connected by any symmetric entangler. We show that the three $\mathrm{Rep}(D_8)$ SPT phases can nevertheless be connected by \emph{symmetry-permuting} finite-depth local unitary circuits, realizing dualities predicted by topological quantum field theory (TQFT). We construct an explicit matrix product unitary connecting two of the $\mathrm{Rep}(D_8)$ SPT phases, and show that its action on string order parameters reproduces the anyon permutation predicted by the TQFT duality.

Emergence of Ferromagnetism from Planar Defects in EuSn2As2 Antiferromagnet

We report an observation and study of monolayer thick structural defects in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) layered semimetal EuSn2As2. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of planar defects in the lattice of the studied single crystals. Using a combination of microstructural and DFT analysis we demonstrated that a single planar defect forms a monolayer of a distinct phase EuSnAs2, that is different from the EuSn2As2 phase of the bulk lattice. The smaller distance between Eu layers in the planar defect as well as odd number of Eu atoms in the formula of the defect (EuSnAs2) and of the defect supercell (Eu7Sn12As14) promote formation of local ferromagnetic (FM) ordering of the Eu atoms. This suggests that on average, the planar defects form a ferrimagnetic minority phase in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) host lattice. The obtained results may explain several puzzling features in magnetic properties of various A-type AFM materials, such as the nonlinear magnetization and ferromagnetic-type hysteresis in low in-plane fields, the upturn of the magnetic susceptibility in the AFM state at temperatures approaching zero, and the emergence of the ferromagnetic-type resonance line in the electron spin resonance spectrum of the AFM state. The present finding provides new insight into understanding the mechanism of ferromagnetism in quasi-two-dimensional AFM materials: it offers a new way to create an AFM-FM interface by self-docking two different crystalline phases of a chemically pure compound. Thus, this result will facilitate the design and implementation of natural AFM-FM interfaces.
