Assay methods for U-238, Th-232, and Pb-210 in lead and calibration of Bi-210 bremsstrahlung emission from lead

Abstract

Assay methods for measuring 238U, 232Th, and 210Pb concentrations in refined lead are presented. The 238U and 232Th concentrations are determined using isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ID-ICP-MS) after anion exchange column separation of dissolved lead samples. The 210Pb concentration is inferred through α-spectroscopy of a daughter isotope, 210Po, after chemical precipitation separation on dissolved lead samples. Subsequent to the 210Po α-spectroscopy assay, a method for evaluating 210Pb concentrations in solid lead samples was developed via measurement of bremsstrahlung radiation from \b{eta}-decay of a daughter isotope, 210Bi, by employing a 14-crystal array of high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors. Ten sources of refined lead were assayed. The 238U concentrations were <34 microBq/kg and the 232Th concentrations ranged <0.6-15 microBq/kg, as determined by the ICP-MS assay method. The 210Pb concentrations ranged from ~0.1-75 Bq/kg, as inferred by the 210Po α-spectroscopy assay method.

Enhanced electron-beam lithography to reduce the frequency scatter of 200-400 GHz superconducting microstrip resonators for on-chip filterbank spectrometers

Integrated superconducting spectrometers (ISSs) provide the instantaneous bandwidth, sensitivity, and scalable architecture for large-scale spectroscopic surveys in submillimeter-wave astronomy and cosmology. However, the accuracy with which the resonant frequencies of superconducting microstrip band pass filters can be spaced, has limited the spectral resolution for these spectrometers with continuous spectral coverage to $\frac{F}{ΔF} < 500$. The origin of this frequency scatter has been largely unknown. In this work, we demonstrate a four-fold improvement in the frequency spacing of superconducting microstrip resonators by optimizing electron-beam lithography. We find that reducing the beam step size (BSS) on the nanometer scale reduces the random frequency scatter, and that avoiding main-field stitching across filter patterns can eliminate a systematic frequency shift between groups of resonators, indicating the different origins of these two modes of frequency deviation. These findings demonstrate that nanometer-scale control of lithographic processes is imperative for the realization of the next-generation integrated superconducting spectrometers with higher spectral resolution.

A flexible DAQ system for the Timepix4 ASIC in the 4DPHOTON project

This paper presents the design and implementation of a flexible data acquisition system13 developed for the Timepix4 ASIC. The system is based on a modular14 FPGA-centric architecture combining high-speed serial readout, Ethernet-based data transport,15 and deterministic multi-board synchronization. The hardware platform includes a scalable stack16 composed of commercial FPGA carrier boards, FMC-based interface electronics, detector-specific17 chipboards, and a dedicated Trigger Logic Unit for synchronized operation.18 The firmware architecture separates control and data paths, enabling independent configuration19 and high-throughput acquisition through UDP over 10 GbE links. The design supports zero-back-20 pressure operation toward the ASIC and allows adaptation of the readout bandwidth to different21 experimental conditions. Synchronization between multiple DAQ systems is achieved through22 a common clock and trigger distribution network, experimentally demonstrated with sub-100 ps23 precision.24 The system has been developed to support detector characterization, laboratory measurements,25 and beam-test campaigns for the 4DPHOTON detector concept. Hardware organization, firmware26 architecture, synchronization strategy, and performance measurements are presented.

An integrated readout system for parallel-plate avalanche counter and multi-wire drift chamber at HIAF-HIRIBL

A newly developed, highly-integrated multi-channel front-end readout system -- FEAM-256 -- is presented for use with position-sensitive gaseous detectors, including parallel-plate avalanche counters (PPACs) and multi-wire drift chambers (MWDCs). The system's position resolution was characterized using both an $α$ source and cosmic-ray muons. Intrinsic position resolutions of 320 $μ$m for the PPAC, and 424 $μ$m for the MWDC were achieved. Designed specifically for integration into the data-acquisition infrastructure at the High-Rigidity radioactive Ion Beam Line (HIRIBL) of China's High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF), FEAM-256 enables seamless incorporation of PPAC and MWDC detectors into the HIRIBL experimental setup.
