Constraining distance and inclination angle of V4641 Sgr using ${\it SWIFT}$ and ${\it NuSTAR}$ observations during low soft spectral state

Abstract

We present results from ${\it NuSTAR}$ and ${\it SWIFT}$/XRT joint spectral analysis of V4641 Sgr during a disk dominated or soft state as well as a powerlaw dominated or hard state. The soft state spectrum is well modeled by a relativistically blurred disk emission, a powerlaw, a broad Iron line, two narrow emission lines and two edges. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation technique and the relativistic effects seen in the disk and broad Iron line allow us to self-consistently constrain the inner disk radius, disk inclination angle and distance to the source at 2.43$^{+0.39}_{-0.17}$ R$_g$ (GM/c$^2$), 69.5$^{+12.8}_{-4.2}$ degrees and 10.8$^{+1.6}_{-2.5}$ kpc respectively. For the hard state, the spectrum is a power-law with a weakly broad Iron line and an edge. The distance estimate gives a measure of the Eddington fraction, $L_{2.0 - 80.0 keV}/L_{Edd}$, to be $\sim$1.3 $\times$ 10$^{-2}$ and $\sim$1.9 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ for the soft and hard states respectively. Unlike many other typical black hole systems which are always in a hard state at such low Eddington fraction, V4641 Sgr shows a soft, disk dominated state. The soft state spectrum shows narrow emission lines at $\sim 6.95$ and $\sim 8.31$ keV which can be identified as being due to emission from highly ionized Iron and Nickel in an X$-$ray irradiated wind respectively. If not due to instrumental effect or calibration error, this would be the first detection of a Ni fluorescent line in a black hole X$-$ray binary.

Neutrino Emission from Gamma-ray Burst Jet inside the Cavity within Active Galactic Nucleus Accretion Disks

Active galactic nucleus (AGN) accretion disks are promising sites for compact binary mergers. Short gamma-ray burst (SGRB) jets from binary neutron star coalescence can propagate within low-density cavities carved by circumbinary outflows. We investigate the high-energy neutrino emission and detectability of such SGRB jets, adopting three seed photon components: prompt GRB emission, AGN disk thermal radiation, and external inverse Compton (EIC) scattered photons. Our results show that neutrino emission is dominated by proton-photon ($pγ$) interactions, with prompt GRB photons and AGN disk photons serving as the dominant target components. The inclusion of AGN disk photons significantly reshapes the neutrino spectrum, shifting the emission peak to lower energies. This effect becomes more pronounced as the mass of the central supermassive black hole decreases and the burst location approaches the black hole. For a fiducial model with a $10^6~ M_\odot$ central black hole and the burst at 10 Schwarzschild radii, IceCube and IceCube-Gen2 achieve maximum luminosity distances of $\sim$180 Mpc and $\sim$400 Mpc, respectively. Next-generation high-sensitivity neutrino observatories, combined with multi-messenger observations, hold promise for identifying such GRBs in AGN environments.

Molecular bipolar outflow in SN 1987A supports the jittering-jets explosion mechanism

I examine high-quality CO and SiO molecular maps of the core-collapse supernova (CCSN) remnant SN 1987A from the literature and find that the molecular gas exhibits a bipolar structure, correlated with the visible bipolar morphology (termed the keyhole) and the bipolar morphology of the iron emission map. I apply a method commonly used in the study of jet-shaped planetary nebulae. The keyhole has a morphology similar to that of many jet-shaped pairs of bubbles in cooling-flow clusters of galaxies and planetary nebulae. Therefore, the findings of this study, which make the bipolar structure of SN 1987A robust, strengthen the claim that a pair of energetic jets shaped the keyhole and its surroundings. According to the jittering-jets explosion mechanism (JJEM), this pair of jets was the most energetic of several pairs that exploded SN 1987A. This study adds to the accumulating evidence that the JJEM is the primary explosion mechanism for CCSNe, responsible for the majority, if not all, CCSNe.

Quasi-Periodic Microstructures in Pulsar Emission: Automated Detection and Archival Survey

The study of quasi-period microstructures in pulsars offers valuable insights into the underlying emission mechanism. However, identifying these features through manual inspection of the intensity time series, often containing thousands to millions of pulses, is both laborious and time-consuming. To address this challenge, we have developed a Python-based software, Quasi-periodic MIcrostructure Search Tool (QMIST), to automate the search for quasi-periodic microstructures in radio pulsar time-series data. We provide a detailed description of the algorithms used in QMIST, demonstrate its efficacy using data on pulsars known to exhibit microstructures, and discuss potential future improvements. Using QMIST, we have performed a multi-epoch survey of quasi-periodic microstructures in a sample of 27 pulsars, using observations from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Green Bank Telescope, as well as the archival data from the Parkes telescope. In addition to recovering previously reported microstructures from several pulsars, we report, for the first time, detection of quasi-periodic microstructures in three pulsars, B1451-68, B1706-16 and B1845-19. We also estimate the typical period of microstructures in another pulsar, B0540+23, that was known to exhibit microstructures earlier but the periodicity was unknown. Using the periodicity measurements from our survey, and earlier such measurements from the literature, we confirm the near linear relationship between the microstructure periodicity and the rotation period of pulsars, and discuss our results in the context of the emission mechanism of microstructures.
