Reverse process of usual optical analysis of boson-exchange superconductors: impurity effects on $s$- and $d$-wave superconductors

Abstract

We performed a reverse process of a usual optical data analysis of boson-exchange superconductors. We calculated the optical self-energy from two (MMP and MMP+peak) input model electron-boson spectral density functions using Allen's formula for one normal and two ($s$- and $d$-wave) superconducting cases. We obtained the optical constants including the optical conductivity and the dynamic dielectric function from the optical self-energy using an extended Drude model, and finally calculated reflectance spectrum. Furthermore to investigate impurity effects on optical quantities we added various levels of impurities (from the clean to the dirty limit) in the optical self-energy and performed the same reverse process to obtain the optical conductivity, the dielectric function, and reflectance. We observed that impurities give similar effects on various optical constants of $s$- and $d$-wave superconductors; the more impurities give the more distinct gap feature and the less superfluid density. However, the $s$-wave superconductor gives the superconducting gap feature more clearly than the $d$-wave superconductor because in the $d$-wave superconductors the optical quantities are averaged over the anisotropic Fermi surface. Our results also supply helpful information to see how characteristic features of the electron-boson spectral function and the $s$- and $d$-wave superconducting gaps appear in various optical constants including raw reflectance spectrum. Our study also may help to understand the usual optical analysis process thoroughly. Further systematic study of experimental data collected at various conditions using the optical analysis process will help to reveal the origin of the mediated boson in the boson-exchange superconductors.

Surface-extended Andreev bound states emerging from intrinsic surface superconductivity of PtBi$_2$

Intrinsic topological superconductivity remains one of the central open questions in condensed-matter physics. The three-dimensional Weyl semimetal PtBi$_2$ has recently been shown by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to host a superconducting gap that opens exclusively on its Fermi-arc surface states and exhibits a nodal structure, making it a promising platform for exploring unconventional and potentially topological superconductivity. However, despite these momentum-resolved insights, the real-space spectroscopic signatures of unconventional superconductivity in PtBi$_2$ remain unclear. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we reveal a sizable and spatially homogeneous gap ($Δ> 10\,\mathrm{meV}$) on atomically pristine terraces of PtBi$_2$. Within this gap, we detect surface-extended in-gap states exhibiting pronounced atomic-scale spatial modulation. Analysis of the tunneling spectra indicates that these states are most consistently interpreted as Andreev bound states within a superconducting gap. Further phenomenological modeling shows that their characteristic spectral features are naturally captured by a chiral pairing scenario. Our results establish a direct real-space connection between the superconducting gap and surface-extended quasiparticle states in PtBi$_2$, and provide new insight into the nature of its unconventional surface superconductivity. These findings highlight PtBi$_2$ as a versatile platform for exploring exotic quasiparticle excitations and potential Majorana physics.

A chemical avenue to manipulate field-reentrant superconducting rivalries in infinite layer nickelates

Recently, preliminary magnetic field-reentrant superconductivity manifested in high-temperature (Tc) Eu-doped infinite-layer (IL) nickelates, beyond analogous discoveries exclusively in low-Tc systems. This evokes intriguing fundamental issues about potential quantum-phase boundary and criticality between unconventional superconductivity and field-reentrant-one, which are inexplicable owing to formidable challenges in growing IL-nickelates towards later-series rare-earths. Herein, we open up chemical avenues to enable effective growth of (RE1-yRE'y)1-xEuxNiO2 (RE/RE': Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy), giving rise to discoveries of RE-4f-related quantum competition between high-Tc and reentrant superconductivity. Robust magnetic-field-reentrant superconductivity with uniaxial anisotropy is observed at superconducting-dome boundaries, stemming from Eu2+-4f7 associated competition between magnetic-fluctuation promoted pairing and exchange-field interactions. Their quantum-criticality is further modulable via RE(RE')-magnetism, which either reinforces reentrancy or elevates Tc (40.1 K) with more robust critical-current-density (~266 kA/cm2 at 2 K) beyond Sr-/Ca-doped counterparts. Our synthetic route enables the establishment of an ideal platform via IL-nickelates for studying 4f-related unconventional superconductivity and quantum-criticality.

Altermagnetic Control of Charge-4e Superconductivity

We show that a two-dimensional classical array of conventional superconducting islands coupled by altermagnetic Josephson junctions supports an independent charge-4e phase. Tuning the altermagnetic splitting suppresses the leading single-pair tunneling harmonic while retaining strong double-pair coupling, producing a finite charge-4e region between staggered and uniform charge-2e states. Using the complete temperature-dependent microscopic Josephson spectrum, we find short-range ordinary pair correlations alongside algebraic coherence of pairs of Cooper pairs. Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless scaling and a half-flux response further identify the charge-4e phase. Our results establish altermagnetism as a microscopic means to select between ordinary and composite superconducting coherence.
